Senior Software Engineer – Layer1, C++

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Ireland.

📋 Description

• Develop Layer1 control software that manages physical-layer connectivity from 1GBASE-T connectors to 1.6T long-reach optics.

• Provide software support across forwarding engines, connectors, and interface chips/gearboxes.

• Create instrumentation and telemetry tools to monitor and troubleshoot the health of physical links.

• Collaborate with Optics teams to establish standards for new media and facilitate their market introduction.

• Engage with customers, product management, and hardware engineers to develop Layer1 features.

• Architect, design, and oversee the development of features.

• Develop and sustain features using C, C++, and Python.

• Review and contribute to functional and design specifications.

• Construct automated tests and establish testing infrastructure.

• Collaborate with hardware and manufacturing teams to launch new Layer1 components, including PHYs and transceivers.

• Partner with hardware engineers on software control interfaces for Layer1 components.

• Provide technical leadership across features, projects, and tools.

• Analyze, mitigate, and resolve customer network issues alongside Customer Support Engineers and customers.

• Investigate system-test issues and deliver solutions.

• Mentor new and junior engineers.

• Manage projects from definition through deployment and customer interaction, ensuring quality delivery.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Engineering with 8 years of experience; or a Master's degree in one of these fields with 6 years of experience; or a Ph.D. in one of these areas with 3 years of experience; or equivalent work experience.

• Proficient in C or C++ and Python.

• Familiarity with UNIX or Linux operating systems.

• Knowledge of digital communication technologies, such as modulation and signal encoding schemes, is advantageous.

• Understanding of IP networking and/or distributed systems is beneficial.

• Experience with low-level hardware components is a plus.

• Practical understanding of software engineering principles.

• Strong problem-solving abilities and software troubleshooting skills.

• Capability to design solutions and independently implement features.

• Ability to collaborate effectively within small teams.
