Senior Software Engineer, Data & AI Solutions

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Texas.

📋 Description

• Conceptualize, develop, and sustain data products that support R&D, analytics, lab, and scientific workflows from the initial design phase to deployment and continuous improvement.

• Create and manage data pipelines for large, intricate datasets, transitioning from raw inputs to derived, analysis-ready datasets.

• Utilize knowledge in genetics and bioinformatics to craft data models, schemas, and abstractions that align with research patterns and the requirements of downstream analysis.

• Develop and enforce architectures for de-identification and privacy preservation that comply with HIPAA and relevant regulatory standards.

• Architect scalable data models for analytics, reporting, and downstream applications.

• Ensure data quality, accuracy, lineage, and observability throughout data pipelines.

• Collaborate with R&D scientists, bioinformatics teams, and software engineers to convert research requirements into reusable data assets.

• Optimize the storage, retrieval, and lifecycle management of extensive scientific files, including sequencing data and derived datasets.

• Lead rapid prototyping efforts for exploratory, proof-of-concept, and early-stage initiatives, facilitating the transition to production-grade systems.

• Apply best practices for data quality, validation, lineage, observability, and reproducibility.

• Work with product managers and domain specialists to convert requirements into technical solutions.

• Develop golden paths, templates, examples, documentation, data product catalogs, patterns, and engineering best practices.

• Offer technical guidance and mentorship to mid-level engineers.

⛳️ Requirements

• A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science or bioinformatics is acceptable, though experience in the healthcare or biotech data domain is preferred.

• Over 8 years of experience in data engineering, with a focus on designing and maintaining data pipelines and cloud data architectures.

• A robust background in bioinformatics, genomics, or computational biology is essential.

• Familiarity with genomics and bioinformatics formats such as BAM, VCF, and FASTQ, along with their compression, storage, delivery, and management requirements.

• Proven experience supporting scientific R&D, lab workflows, and research teams with production-quality data systems.

• High proficiency in Python, SQL, and distributed processing frameworks like Spark or their equivalents.

• Experience with orchestration tools such as Airflow, dbt, or Dagster.

• Experience with AI-assisted development tools, including LLM copilots.

• Knowledge of data products that support analytics, ML, or AI applications.

• Strong expertise in data modeling, including dimensional, normalized, and healthcare-specific schemas.

• Experience implementing CI/CD practices for data pipelines and infrastructure as code using Terraform or CloudFormation.

• Understanding of data observability, testing, and data quality frameworks.

• Proven ownership of production-quality data systems and the end-to-end pipeline lifecycle.

• Capability to assess emerging data and AI technologies and propose scalable solutions.

• Familiarity with vector databases, embeddings, semantic search, or RAG-based architectures is advantageous.

• Ability to function effectively in fast-paced environments while maintaining a balance of speed, rigor, and compliance.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across engineering, analytics, and business stakeholders.

• Experience in healthcare, life sciences, or other highly regulated data domains, including hands-on HIPAA compliance.
