Senior Software Engineer, Core Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New York.

📋 Description

• Create and design innovative solutions to enhance the scalability of Reddit.

• Develop platform API projects that extend across the organization.

• Guide and mentor junior engineers within the direct team.

• Construct, deliver, and manage services capable of handling millions of transactions per second with over 99.999% availability.

• Enhance Reddit’s media experience for hundreds of millions of global users.

• Expand team expertise in the ingestion, processing, storage, and distribution of media on a global scale.

• Develop, manage, and scale the media platform that serves Reddit users worldwide.

• Design, build, and maintain essential foundational services, platforms, and libraries utilized by Reddit engineering teams.

• Assist in creating an engineering roadmap aligned with organizational objectives and Reddit’s expansion.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive software development experience in one or more general-purpose programming languages such as Python, Go, or similar.

• Over 5 years of experience with large-scale, mission-critical distributed systems.

• Exceptional communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively in a fully remote setting.

• Proficiency in GraphQL, gRPC, Thrift, Protobuf, and the design and implementation of maintainable APIs.

• Knowledge of Kubernetes and cloud platforms like AWS and GCP.

• Proven track record of writing clean, maintainable, and thoroughly tested code.

• Expertise in media delivery from back-end systems to end users.

• Experience in optimizing media performance, scalability, and delivery across various stack levels.

• Understanding of media processing and global media distribution.

• Familiarity with image scaling, cropping, progressive JPEG, WebP, HTTP Live Streaming (HLS), MPEG-DASH, MP4, streaming protocols, and video compression standards such as H.264, H.265/HEVC, VP9, and AV1.

• Experience managing distribution from user origin through CDN to the end user experience.
