Senior Software Engineer, Core Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Illinois.

📋 Description

• Create and design innovative solutions to enhance Reddit's scalability.

• Develop platform API projects that can be extended throughout the organization.

• Provide mentorship and guidance to junior engineers within the team.

• Construct, deliver, and manage services that can handle millions of transactions per second with over 99.999% availability.

• Enhance Reddit’s media experience for hundreds of millions of users globally.

• Build, manage, and scale the media platform that serves Reddit users around the world.

• Design, develop, and maintain essential foundational services, platforms, and libraries utilized by Reddit engineering teams.

• Assist in creating an engineering roadmap that aligns with organizational objectives and supports Reddit's growth.

• Serve as a technical coach and mentor.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive software development experience in one or more general-purpose programming languages such as Python, Go, or similar.

• Over 5 years of experience working with large-scale, mission-critical distributed systems.

• Exceptional communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively in a fully remote setting.

• Capability to discuss intricate topics with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

• Proficiency in GraphQL, gRPC, Thrift, Protobuf, and the design and implementation of maintainable APIs.

• Familiarity with Kubernetes and cloud platforms (AWS, GCP).

• Proven track record of developing clean, maintainable, and well-tested code.

• Expertise in media delivery from backend systems to end users.

• Experience in optimizing media performance, scalability, and delivery across various stages of the tech stack.

• Knowledge in media processing and global media distribution.

• Understanding of image scaling, cropping, progressive JPEG, WebP, HTTP Live Streaming (HLS), MPEG-DASH, MP4, streaming protocols, and video compression standards such as H.264, H.265/HEVC, VP9, and AV1.

• Knowledge of the distribution process from user origin through CDN to the user experience.
