This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Germany.
• Taking ownership of the architecture, including authentication and identity flows, multi-tenancy, data movement, performance considerations, and production operations.
• Managing your own creations. From the outset, you will be on-call for your work, even before a dedicated platform is available, meaning you will handle the infrastructure, CI, deployment, and observability associated with it.
• Collaborating with external platforms that you cannot modify, while clearly identifying which risks fall under your management and which do not.
• Working closely with internal teams whose services you rely on: clearly communicating requests, agreeing on interfaces, and finding proactive ways to continue progress instead of waiting for resolutions.
• Over 5 years of software development experience, particularly in data-intensive or integration-focused systems.
• Strong backend and systems instincts. You can evaluate deployment topology, multi-tenancy, and data movement, and you are comfortable making and living with architectural trade-offs.
• Experience with modern authentication protocols, service principals, and identity federation, with an understanding of how to navigate trust boundaries effectively.
• Familiarity with building on external platforms, recognizing the challenges such as incomplete documentation and unexpected breaking changes.
• Ability to thrive in uncertain situations. You can deliver even when specifications are incomplete, make informed decisions under ambiguity, and identify choices that may be difficult to reverse.
• Strong interpersonal skills with fellow engineers. Much of the work involves collaboration with teams you do not lead, and you build their trust through your thought process, not just your code contributions.
• Primarily a backend engineer, but sufficiently competent in JavaScript / TypeScript to contribute when necessary.
• Proficient in using AI tools effectively and transparently. Utilize resources like Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, or any other applicable tools, and be open about their contributions to your work.
• Excellent writing skills. Most coordination occurs through design documents, pull requests, and RFCs.
• Flexible work environment - ClickHouse operates as a globally distributed and remote-friendly company, currently active in over 20 countries.
• Healthcare - Employer contributions towards your healthcare expenses.
• Equity in the company - Every new team member receives stock options upon joining.
• Time off - Flexible time off policies in the US and generous leave entitlements in other countries.
• A $500 home office setup allowance for remote employees.
• Global Gatherings – We value in-person connections and offer opportunities for engagement with colleagues during company-wide offsites.
