Senior Software Engineer, Backoffice Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom.

📋 Description

• Manage and oversee Ably’s back office platform for customer packages, entitlements, limits, and billing.

• Sustain the tools utilized daily by Finance, Customer Success, and Support teams.

• Take ownership of problem design and solution delivery for ambiguously defined business challenges.

• Enhance administration tools to enable staff to comprehend customer purchases, billing, limits, and modifications.

• Collaborate with Finance, Customer Success, Support, and Engineering to understand and refine processes.

• Leverage LLMs and AI tools for planning, prototyping, coding, and documentation while ensuring correctness and architecture integrity.

• Ensure that system decisions and invoices are transparent without necessitating engineers to review code.

• Establish testing standards and create suitable test harnesses for financially sensitive systems.

• Set and uphold production-readiness criteria.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven experience working within large, established codebases.

• Good judgment in determining when a system should be extended, redesigned, or replaced.

• Familiarity with Ruby on Rails is advantageous, though proficiency across multiple languages is more valuable than expertise in a single one.

• A history of influencing architecture within an inherited system, including decisions regarding data ownership.

• Ability to take initiative, navigate through ambiguity, and make informed decisions independently.

• Capability to question requirements and recognize when process modifications are preferable to coding solutions.

• An AI-first mindset with the ability to apply appropriate rigor when utilizing LLMs and AI tools.

• Experience in making systems observable and testable.

• Track record of instrumenting systems to address unexpected queries.

• Experience in establishing a testing strategy for systems with limited test coverage.

• Experience with usage-based billing is a plus.

• Background in platform or internal tooling teams is a plus.

• Experience in being accountable for a system, especially one subject to financial or compliance audits, is a plus.
