Senior Software Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in India.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of comprehensive messaging-path services from start to finish, encompassing design, implementation, automated testing, monitoring, and production performance.

• Enhance fragile or poorly understood areas by increasing test coverage, improving observability, reducing technical debt, and creating thorough documentation.

• Make message delivery transparent, detailing what was sent, delivered, undelivered, and the reasons behind it.

• Contribute to gradual modernization while ensuring coexistence and rollback options are available.

• Collaborate with Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) during the design phase and utilize available tooling.

• Manage incidents, restore services promptly, and bolster resilience through testing, alerts, or corrective measures.

• Estimate tasks accurately and communicate any technical and scheduling risks proactively.

• Review designs and code, offering mentorship to less experienced engineers throughout the Request for Comments (RFC) process.

• Assume responsibility for the overall quality and productivity of the team beyond assigned tasks.

⛳️ Requirements

• Seven or more years of experience in developing production backend software, including services that handle substantial volumes.

• Proven experience in operating the systems you build, which includes instrumenting services, addressing incidents, and repairing services.

• Ability to work comfortably within an established, undocumented, or only partially documented codebase.

• Hands-on experience with asynchronous, queue-driven, or event-driven systems, understanding various failure modes such as retries, duplicates, backpressure, partial failures, and out-of-order delivery.

• Experience in automated testing methodologies.

• Strong proficiency in written communication in English.

• A history of making progress while collaborating across different time zones.

• Residing in India, with a consistent working overlap with colleagues in Europe and the United States.

• Permanent residency in India is required, with ongoing residency necessary for employment.

• Preferred: experience with messaging, notification, or delivery infrastructure at scale.

• Preferred: familiarity with managed cloud messaging and serverless building blocks on a leading cloud provider.

• Preferred: knowledge of Kubernetes, infrastructure-as-code, and multi-cloud operations.

• Preferred: proficiency in C or C++ in conjunction with a higher-level language like Python.

• Preferred: experience in system instrumentation and alerting.

• Preferred: involvement in the incremental modernization of operational systems.

• Preferred: experience in mentoring, code reviews, and enhancing shared technical practices.

• Preferred: fluency with AI-assisted development tools.

• Preferred: background in building software where failure has significant consequences.
