This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +29 more states.
• Executing daily operational and DevOps activities on Wikimedia’s publicly accessible infrastructure, including deployment, maintenance, configuration, and troubleshooting.
• Applying and managing configuration management and deployment tools such as Puppet and Kubernetes.
• Driving continuous enhancement by automating the installation, configuration, and maintenance of services on our platform.
• Collaborating closely with product teams to help deliver scalable functionalities to our users by aiding in the architectural design of new services and ensuring their performance at scale.
• Engaging in a 24/7 on-call rotation shared among the wider SRE team, which involves participating in incident responses, diagnosing issues, and following up on system outages or alerts within Wikimedia’s production infrastructure.
• Working in synergy with a global, cross-functional team in an environment that prioritizes asynchronous communication.
• Providing mentorship to colleagues in your areas of technical and operational expertise.
• Over 6 years of experience in an SRE, Operations, or DevOps role as part of a cohesive team.
• Proficiency in shell scripting and any scripting language relevant to SRE contexts (Python, Go, Bash, Ruby; our primary language is Python) and configuration management tools (Puppet, Ansible; we utilize Puppet).
• Familiarity with distributed caching systems, including their fundamental algorithms and methods to enhance their performance.
• Experience with package management on Linux systems (we operate on Debian).
• Strong skills in Linux system-level troubleshooting.
• Proven track record of automating tasks and processes, identifying process deficiencies, and uncovering automation opportunities.
• Excellent English language proficiency (both verbal and written) and the ability to work independently as an effective contributor to a globally distributed team across multiple time zones.
• Background in leading and participating in incident response and post-incident review processes, focusing on root cause analysis and implementing preventative measures.
