This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.
• Oversee the complete engineering design process for microgrid systems, which includes solar PV arrays, battery energy storage systems (BESS), backup generators, and hybrid control architectures.
• Create and maintain the system single-line diagrams (SLDs), electrical schematics, equipment specifications, and design packages from 30% completion to Issued for Construction (IFC).
• Determine the sizing and selection of key equipment such as inverters, charge controllers, transformers, switchgear, battery systems, and generator sets.
• Conduct load analysis, energy modeling, and system performance simulations to confirm design assumptions and enhance system configurations.
• Design and specify the controls and SCADA architecture for automated microgrid management and remote monitoring solutions.
• Ensure that all designs adhere to internal company standards, contractual obligations, jurisdictional and utility requirements, as well as relevant codes and standards.
• Act as the primary technical leader on several simultaneous projects from Notice to Proceed (NTP) through to commissioning and handover.
• Create and manage engineering deliverable schedules that align with project milestones and deployment timelines.
• Collaborate with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs), utilities, and third-party engineers for permitting, interconnection, and inspections.
• Assist procurement efforts by crafting RFQs, assessing vendor submittals, and providing technical evaluations of equipment bids.
• Offer technical assistance to field crews and commissioning teams during the installation and startup phases.
• Review and respond promptly to RFIs, submittals, and design change requests.
• A Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a closely related technical discipline.
• Over 7 years of engineering experience with a significant emphasis on solar PV, BESS, generators, and/or microgrid systems.
• Proven experience in leading the technical design of utility-scale or commercial/industrial solar + storage projects.
• Comprehensive knowledge of battery energy storage systems (BESS), including various chemistry types, BMS architecture, integration, and safety standards.
• In-depth understanding of relevant codes and standards pertaining to distributed energy systems (NEC, IBC, IFC, NFPA, UL, IEEE).
• Familiarity with utility interconnection processes/standards and permitting across multiple jurisdictions.
• Proficient in electrical design software tools (AutoCAD, PVsyst, Helioscope, ETAP, or similar).
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills — capable of presenting technical information to non-technical audiences.
• Strong organizational abilities and a capacity to manage multiple projects concurrently.
