This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New Jersey.
• Underwrite complex new and renewal business profitably by selecting risks, pricing appropriately, ensuring contractual integrity, and managing accounts, all while adhering to delegated authority and regulatory compliance.
• Utilize critical thinking skills to evaluate risks and identify potential exposures and controls.
• Price risks in line with identified exposures and implemented controls.
• Establish suitable terms and conditions to ensure a profitable portfolio.
• Document assigned files to reflect the underwriting rationale.
• Act as a subject matter expert to support team members with intricate risks.
• Leverage effective portfolio management skills to meet profit and premium objectives aligned with the business unit strategies.
• Meet production targets within the designated territory.
• Engage in marketing efforts, which include both face-to-face and virtual sales interactions with agencies and insured clients.
• Identify and cultivate a robust pipeline of new business opportunities.
• Build and maintain successful relationships with producers and agencies.
• Represent UFG in the market by communicating the company’s underwriting, risk control, and claims capabilities across all business units.
• Collaborate with various internal partners, including Business Unit and Line of Business underwriting, Sales and Distribution, Underwriting Center, Underwriting Support, Risk Control, Legal, and Claims, to ensure optimal stakeholder management.
• Conduct agency reviews to gather relevant insights on market opportunities.
• Provide management with feedback on the current market landscape, agencies, and competitive dynamics.
• Mentor and train team members, serving as a resource for inquiries, resolving escalated issues, and offering guidance.
• Advocate for the field underwriter perspective in key corporate initiatives and projects.
• Assist in the deployment of technical underwriting training and content.
• A four-year college degree is preferred.
• Completion of or progress towards AU, CIC, and/or CPCU designations is preferred.
• A minimum of 5 years of experience in commercial lines underwriting is preferred.
• Advanced skills in risk evaluation and knowledge of insurance contracts.
• Ability to implement the current underwriting strategy for the assigned territory to make informed underwriting decisions.
• Strong leadership capabilities, including the ability to mentor, coach, and train others.
• Proficient in working in a fast-paced environment while effectively prioritizing and completing tasks.
• Excellent customer service abilities.
• Strong stakeholder management skills, including the capacity to build a high level of trust with internal and external partners.
• Analytical and problem-solving capabilities with a keen attention to detail.
• Exceptional communication and negotiation skills.
• Effective time-management abilities with a proven track record of meeting deadlines and effective dates.
• In-depth understanding of the agency force and the current market environment.
• Proven sales skills with a successful history of growing a profitable book of business.
