📋 Description

• Provide strategic leadership, scientific direction, and technical, analytical, and public engagement support to further the UCS objective of enhancing the safety and security of nuclear energy and the nuclear fuel cycle.

• Conduct research and analysis to support UCS’s nuclear power safety initiative and energy campaign, collaborating with coalition and grassroots partners.

• Act as a spokesperson and technical authority representing UCS in public forums, engaging with media, policymakers, regulators, and stakeholders.

• Design and execute research and analysis that complies with legal standards for human subjects and environmental protection while maintaining scientific excellence.

• Collaborate with leadership and colleagues to ensure that organizational and programmatic goals, strategies, priorities, and decisions are based on the best available science, advancing campaign objectives.

• Identify strategic opportunities for new research areas, including innovative analytical or policy initiatives.

• Foster collaborative efforts across programs to develop and test evidence-based solutions for policy, regulatory, and other decision-making challenges.

• Oversee research and analysis projects related to nuclear power and safety issues, including scoping, planning, execution, and evaluation.

• Write, edit, and review peer-reviewed papers, reports, fact sheets, issue/policy briefs, and other materials that highlight the results of various analyses, adhering to UCS protocols for the review, production, and presentation of outcomes.

• Promote and communicate UCS’s priorities online and via social media by creating blog posts, web content, and other digital materials.

• Assist in fundraising and development initiatives through donor meetings and additional efforts to build and maintain relationships.


⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant discipline, such as nuclear engineering or physics, with a preference for a Master’s degree.

• Over 7 years of relevant experience, which may include academic-related work. Experience in nuclear power plant operations is especially valuable.

• Knowledge of nuclear safety and security regulatory standards and regulations, including those set by the NRC, DOE, and International Atomic Energy Agency.

• Broad understanding of one or more technical areas related to the safety and security of nuclear power and fuel cycle facilities for both existing light-water reactors and new designs (small modular light-water reactors, non-light-water reactors), including accident analysis or radiological assessment.

• Strong qualitative and quantitative analytical skills, experience in designing and conducting scientific research and analysis; familiarity with computer codes such as MCNP/OpenMC, SCALE, MELCOR, and MACCS/HYSPLIT, along with experience in performing radiological consequence assessments of nuclear facility accidents, is preferred.

• Insight into how science, economic and technical analyses, and advocacy shape public opinion, public policy, and litigation.

• Innovative thinking skills; ability to create novel applications for existing data streams.

• Strong collaboration and relationship-building abilities, both internally and with external stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.

• Experience with coalitions, legislative processes, advocacy skills, and policy/planning analysis.

• Exceptional writing and presentation capabilities; ability to communicate effectively with technical experts and other professionals, as well as to convey complex scientific concepts to non-expert audiences.

• Project management expertise.

• Capacity to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple projects and deadlines.

• Experience incorporating equity, inclusion, and justice into work/projects; demonstrated ability to center equity in technical analysis.

• Knowledge of racial equity and inclusion principles and understanding how race and other identities intersect within scientific, policymaking, and environmental contexts. Must be comfortable discussing identities such as race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, class, ability, and their contemporary implications.
