This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in South Africa, +5 more states.
• Acquire a comprehensive understanding of Paymentology’s business operations, offerings, and regulatory environment to provide contextual and effective legal support.
• Serve as the main legal advisor for designated legal matters and oversee the legal delivery within the designated area.
• Establish trusted relationships with stakeholders and collaborate with supported business functions.
• Offer legal assistance throughout commercial and business initiatives.
• Counsel on contract enforceability, licensing issues, regulatory compliance, and cross-border legal risks.
• Lead the drafting, negotiation, and execution of intricate commercial agreements with customers, partners, suppliers, and strategic counterparts.
• Provide legal advice to the People team concerning employment law issues.
• Ensure legal counsel aligns with business objectives, facilitating growth while managing legal risks.
• Independently handle complex, cross-functional legal matters under the guidance of the Legal and Compliance Director.
• Mentor and coach Legal team members and manage direct reports when applicable.
• Identify legal and regulatory risks and propose mitigation strategies.
• Enhance internal legal frameworks, contract templates, and best practices.
• Work in partnership with external counsel and relay advice to internal stakeholders.
• Conduct legal and regulatory research across various jurisdictions.
• Analyze and distill complex laws and regulations into actionable legal opinions and memoranda.
• Evaluate the impact of legal and regulatory changes on the business.
• Contribute to knowledge-sharing initiatives and training programs.
• Deliver internal legal training and briefings on research topics and regulatory matters.
• A qualified lawyer with 6–8 years of post-qualification experience in commercial law.
• Solid background in contract negotiation and advisory roles.
• Ideally experienced in financial services, fintech, or technology-driven organizations.
• Strong legal research and analytical capabilities.
• Proven experience in interpreting and applying regulations and legislation.
• Exceptional drafting skills for contracts, legal opinions, internal memoranda, and business-facing guidance.
• Good grasp of commercial legal risk and the ability to offer pragmatic, solutions-oriented advice.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
• Ability to perform under pressure and manage competing priorities in a fast-paced, remote-first setting.
• Capability to work independently with minimal supervision across multiple jurisdictions and time zones.
• Skill in clarifying complex legal and regulatory issues to non-legal stakeholders.
• Proactive and organized approach to enhancing legal processes, templates, and workflows.
• Law degree and legal qualification, such as bar admission, attorney admission, solicitor qualification, or equivalent.
• Experience functioning as the primary legal contact for business stakeholders.
• Proven track record of independently managing high-value or strategically important commercial negotiations.
• Demonstrated experience with commercial contracts, regulatory issues, and cross-border legal considerations.
• Experience in interpreting external legal advice and converting it into internal guidance.
