Senior / Lead Backend Java Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Bolivia.

📋 Description

• Assume complete technical responsibility for major backend systems, features, and integrations.

• Convert unclear business requirements into scalable technical solutions.

• Facilitate discussions on technical design, architecture, frameworks, APIs, data models, performance, and implementation choices.

• Recognize technical risks and suggest potential solutions.

• Balance immediate delivery needs with long-term maintainability and platform architecture considerations.

• Ensure the quality, reliability, and successful deployment of solutions.

• Guide and mentor junior and mid-level engineers, offering technical expertise.

• Conduct code reviews and advocate for clean code, design patterns, testing, documentation, and engineering best practices.

• Create and implement scalable, secure, maintainable, high-performance backend applications utilizing Java and Spring.

• Design and maintain REST APIs as well as internal and external integrations.

• Develop and enhance microservices and distributed backend systems.

• Design database schemas and optimize queries.

• Diagnose production issues and lead root-cause analysis towards permanent resolutions.

• Identify performance bottlenecks and execute appropriate solutions.

• Write automated tests.

• Collaborate with product, business, engineering, and technical leadership teams.

• Clarify business challenges and propose technical solutions.

• Communicate architectural decisions, technical constraints, risks, and trade-offs.

• Build stakeholder confidence through ownership and sound engineering judgment.

• Utilize AI-assisted development tools for implementation, analysis, debugging, testing, and refactoring.

• Validate AI-generated code and uncover productivity opportunities while ensuring quality.

⛳️ Requirements

• 7+ years of professional experience in software engineering, with significant hands-on backend development.

• Proficient in advanced Java, including core Java principles, object-oriented programming, concurrency, collections, exception handling, and application performance.

• Strong practical experience with Spring and Spring Boot.

• Proven experience in designing and developing microservices and distributed backend systems.

• Extensive experience in designing and maintaining REST APIs and third-party integrations.

• Solid understanding of relational databases, including schema design, SQL, query optimization, and performance considerations.

• Familiarity with ORM technologies like JPA/Hibernate or similar.

• Proficient with Git and contemporary software development methodologies.

• Experience with automated testing and maintaining code quality.

• Strong hands-on experience with AI code assistants such as Claude Code and Codex.

• Experience in Agile development environments.

• Practical experience with cloud platforms, preferably AWS.

• Strong capabilities in debugging, troubleshooting, production support, and root-cause analysis.

• Experience in owning a complex project, system, or significant feature from inception to delivery.

• Experience in making or influencing substantial technical or architectural decisions.

• Experience enhancing another engineer's technical skills through mentorship or feedback.

• Ability to navigate ambiguous requirements and independently determine the path forward.

• Experience collaborating directly with business or product stakeholders to shape technical solutions.

• Preferred: experience with high-volume transactional systems, event-driven architecture, Kafka, asynchronous processing, high-volume data pipelines, e-commerce, order management, inventory, logistics, payments, shipping integrations, SOAP, GraphQL, gRPC, SAP Commerce (Hybris), web and mobile ecosystems, high availability, resilience, scalability, observability, monitoring, and production performance analysis.
