Senior Instrument Scientist, Calibration Design

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Alabama, +25 more states.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of the calibration methodology for both radiometric and geometric aspects of the instrument.

• Establish standards and procedures that convert raw signals from the instrument into calibrated, science-quality measurements.

• Create standards and procedures to assess and rectify the instrument's pointing and geometric precision.

• Collaborate with the Infrared Data Product team to define calibration data processing and outputs.

• Ensure that calibration artifacts fulfill the requirements of downstream products.

• Assist in the planning of ground-calibration tests and translate methodologies into actionable test procedures.

• Engage in a 24/7 on-call rotation for resolving on-orbit anomalies, approximately one week every six weeks.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's, Master's, or doctoral degree in engineering, physics, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.

• Over 5 years of experience in developing radiometric or geometric calibration methodologies for imaging systems, remote sensing instruments, or similar electro-optical hardware.

• Knowledge of calibration equipment like integrating spheres, blackbodies, collimators, or autocollimators.

• Proven experience in transforming radiometric or geometric calibration methodologies into data processing algorithms that yield calibration products.

• Excellent communication skills, capable of converting calibration methodologies into requirements and test procedures across Instrument Systems, Instrument Assembly, Integration and Test, and Instrument Design.

• Familiarity with ground calibration test infrastructure and associated procedures.

• Experience with visible and infrared sensors, along with scanner characterization.

• Background in supporting calibration data validation with downstream data product teams.

• Knowledge in calibration uncertainty analysis and error budgeting.

• Willingness to travel occasionally to support in-person calibration or validation efforts.

• Must meet the applicable ITAR/EAR export-control eligibility requirements: be a U.S. person, eligible to access export-controlled information without authorization, or eligible and reasonably likely to obtain the required export authorization.
