Senior Hardware Systems Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Illinois.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of the complete hardware architecture for Outpost kiosks and additional site technology systems.

• Create reference designs and establish standards for edge computing, networking, power management, displays, cameras, access systems, peripherals, cabling, mounting, and supporting infrastructure.

• Assess, choose, and validate hardware platforms, components, vendors, and deployment strategies.

• Design dependable power and recovery systems, encompassing power supplies, PoE, distribution, backup power solutions, managed reboot capabilities, watchdogs, and out-of-band access.

• Establish edge computing standards across Ubuntu, NVIDIA Jetson, industrial PCs, embedded systems, storage solutions, networking, thermal management, enclosures, and connected peripherals.

• Specify provisioning, configuration, monitoring, patching, inventory management, updates, remote access, recovery, and replacement processes for large-scale distributed systems.

• Construct and evaluate prototypes, proof-of-concept systems, and design modifications, including testing for failures and recovery.

• Develop bills of materials, diagrams, specifications, installation standards, validation procedures, and troubleshooting documentation.

• Collaborate with Linux, networking, software, security, product, and Field Operations teams.

• Assist in pilot deployments and occasional field installations.

• Analyze recurring failures and translate root causes into enhancements for architecture, components, automation, and deployment.

• Oversee hardware lifecycle issues, including revisions, substitutions, spares, vendor alternatives, obsolescence, and replacement standards.

• Participate in an on-call rotation.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 5 years of experience in hardware systems, embedded systems, edge infrastructure, or a comparable engineering role that supports production deployments.

• Experience acting as the technical owner for an integrated hardware platform or distributed site architecture.

• Practical experience with Ubuntu-based edge systems, embedded Linux, and NVIDIA Jetson platforms.

• Background in designing and supporting industrial computers, embedded PCs, single-board computers, or GPU-enabled edge systems.

• Strong knowledge of power supplies, PoE, power distribution, backup power solutions, remote power management, and recovery from power interruptions.

• Proven experience in deploying and managing fleets of remote, embedded, or unattended systems at scale.

• Familiarity with automated provisioning, configuration management, monitoring, patching, asset inventory, staged deployments, and remote recovery.

• Working knowledge of Ethernet networking, IP addressing, switching, routing, VPNs, and cellular connectivity.

• Experience integrating computing platforms, networking equipment, displays, cameras, sensors, and other connected peripherals.

• Ability to troubleshoot across hardware, firmware, operating systems, networks, and applications.

• A history of transitioning systems from prototype through pilot deployment to repeatable production.

• Excellent communication and documentation skills, capable of collaborating with both technical and non-technical teams while independently managing ambiguous challenges.

• Preferred: experience with kiosks, machine vision, security cameras, access control, industrial automation, or IoT systems.

• Preferred: experience in designing enclosures, mounting systems, thermal solutions, or equipment for outdoor and semi-controlled environments.

• Preferred: experience with environmental, failure-mode, or reliability testing.

• Preferred: knowledge of Secure Boot, TPM-backed capabilities, disk encryption, certificate management, and other edge-device security practices.

• Preferred: experience collaborating with field technicians, manufacturers, vendors, or distributed installation teams.
