Senior Engineering Manager, Search

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +4 more states.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of the technical strategy, roadmap, and objectives for both Single and Cross retailer search, query comprehension, suggestions, and Ads on Search.

• Drive revenue growth while maintaining a rigorous quality standard.

• Advocate for the implementation of LLMs in the search process.

• Collaborate with the platform team to design and deploy the next-generation search retrieval architecture, while balancing latency and reliability for a tier-1 platform.

• Increase the team's experimentation pace by investing in evaluation, AI-native debugging tools, and foundational machine learning capabilities.

• Work closely with ML, Product, Data Science, the Home and Discovery Platform teams, the Ads division, and whitelabel retailer teams to align ranking modifications with business and retailer results.

• Recruit, mentor, and guide engineers, while fostering an inclusive and high-trust team culture.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 4 years of engineering management experience leading high-achieving teams, with at least 10 years of overall engineering experience.

• Proven experience in building or managing search, recommendations, ranking, or other applied machine learning systems, either as a manager or a senior individual contributor.

• Knowledge of contemporary retrieval methods, including neural/semantic retrieval, ANN, and LLM-based query understanding or re-ranking.

• Strong technical expertise in machine learning and large-scale distributed/backend systems; capable of guiding and earning the trust of staff-level engineers.

• A history of managing complex, cross-functional technical initiatives from strategy to launch while maintaining high standards for quality and reliability.

• Proven product and business acumen: able to link modeling and ranking decisions to metrics such as conversion and revenue, and to navigate trade-offs (e.g., relevance vs. latency, organic vs. ads).

• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills; adept at connecting technical and non-technical partners.
