Senior Engineering Manager, Platform Engineering

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Lead, mentor, and develop an engineering team tasked with overseeing NerdWallet’s platform systems, which include the Content Platform, CMS, and Product Data Platform.

• Propel the advancement of engineering workflows through the strategic implementation of AI-assisted development methodologies, automation, and operational tools.

• Collaborate with Product Managers and other cross-functional teams to strategize, prioritize, and implement the product roadmap effectively.

• Advocate for process enhancements that boost engineering velocity, efficiency, and developer experience, all while upholding high standards for quality and reliability.

• Ensure consistent application of software development best practices, encompassing code quality, testing, documentation, and operational excellence.

• Contribute to and guide technical and architectural decisions, guaranteeing that solutions are scalable, reliable, secure, and compliant with regulatory standards.

• Balance the evolution of the platform (such as headless CMS, APIs, content workflows) with the stability required for high-traffic, mission-critical systems.

• Oversee sprint planning, project timelines, and delivery commitments, ensuring predictable and high-quality execution.

• Identify technical risks, dependencies, and delivery obstacles, addressing and escalating them proactively.

• Cultivate a culture of collaboration, accountability, continuous improvement, and psychological safety.

• Assist in hiring, onboarding, performance management, and career development for engineers across various levels.

• Ensure that systems managed by the team adhere to availability, performance, and security standards.

⛳️ Requirements

• 8+ years of pertinent software engineering experience.

• 5+ years of experience in a managerial role leading an engineering team.

• Demonstrated experience delivering production software in a complex, fast-paced environment, particularly within FinTech or regulated sectors.

• Proven track record in owning and managing large-scale content management systems and headless architectures (our current platform is based on WordPress).

• Established success in leading large-scale backend systems.

• Strong grasp of the software development life cycle, agile methodologies, and contemporary engineering practices.

• Solid technical background with experience in designing and constructing scalable, reliable, and secure systems.

• Proficient in either PHP or Python, GraphQL, SQL, and TypeScript.

• Familiarity with security best practices, data privacy, and compliance aspects in financial systems.

• Proven ability to coach, mentor, and support engineers of various levels through clear, actionable feedback.

• Excellent communication and collaboration abilities, capable of working effectively with both technical and non-technical partners.

• Experience balancing delivery commitments with technical quality and long-term maintainability.

• Experience in developing scalable web applications with a focus on SEO.

• Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, with a demonstrated ability to manage and deliver complex engineering projects on time and at scale.
