This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.
• Conduct reliability modeling and statistical analysis on energy management and protection/control products to forecast field performance and serve as the authority on reliability design choices.
• Create and implement reliability test plans for both hardware and software, involving hardware-in-the-loop (HIL), environmental, and stress testing of grid components.
• Lead FMEA, FMECA, and Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for hardware/software failure events across embedded systems and communication layers.
• Collaborate with product design, systems engineering, and software teams to embed Design for Reliability (DfR) from the initial concept to deployment.
• Examine field data from deployed devices (e.g., relays, RTUs, control systems) to pinpoint systemic issues and propose corrective/preventive measures.
• Work alongside utilities and customers to enhance grid asset performance programs and initiatives for grid modernization, including IEC 61850, virtualization, and advanced diagnostics.
• Develop and oversee reliability KPIs (e.g., MTBF, FIT rate, availability) for product lines and integrate them into product development and quality assurance programs.
• Identify and promote the use of predictive and condition-based maintenance strategies utilizing remote diagnostics, SCADA, and sensor data.
• Consult and coordinate with the Innovation Office and Applications team to ensure that reliability priorities guide participation in working groups, standards leadership, and technology strategy.
• Remain updated on regulatory compliance requirements (e.g., NERC, IEEE, IEC standards) that affect utility asset reliability and cybersecurity.
• Provide coaching, training, and support on reliability practices to both internal teams and external stakeholders.
• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field.
• Significant experience in reliability, systems, or product engineering within the energy or utility sector.
• Knowledgeable about protection & control systems, grid-edge devices, substation automation, and utility-grade software solutions.
• Practical experience with reliability engineering tools and standards (e.g., ReliaSoft, ISO 9001/55000, IEC 61025).
• Familiarity with communication protocols and standards in T&D systems: IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus, IEEE C37.118, etc.
• Strong analytical skills and experience using data analysis platforms (e.g., Python, R, Minitab, Power BI).
• Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities; capable of engaging cross-functional teams and utility customers.
• Understanding of grid reliability challenges in T&D environments and willingness to travel for customer interactions, conferences, and global collaboration.
• Collaborative leadership skills across engineering, field teams, and customers.
• Data-driven problem-solving mindset with a focus on long-term product health and systems thinking.
• Proactive attitude towards emerging technologies and continuous improvement.
• Master’s degree in Reliability or Systems Engineering.
• Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE) or a similar professional certification.
• Experience with model-based design and HIL testing (e.g., RTDS, PSCAD, or EMTP) for utility applications and simulation tools used in electronics and CAD design.
• Background in working directly with T&D utilities, assisting in product deployments, failure investigations, or asset strategies.
• Knowledge of cybersecurity risk and reliability considerations for critical infrastructure.
