This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Virginia.
• Develop, maintain, and enhance the embedded Linux software stack operating on Jetson Orin NX and AAEON edge computing hardware within SmartMast units.
• Construct and integrate ROS2 nodes and packages for the orchestration of multiple sensors, including EO cameras (Axis), radar, SDR, AIS, GPS, and thermal imaging devices.
• Design and oversee OTA software and firmware update pipelines (AWS IoT Jobs or Mender-based) that ensure reliable deployment to a globally distributed fleet.
• Create sensor driver integrations and calibration routines; guarantee co-collection timing and synchronization across diverse sensor modalities.
• Optimize AI inference pipelines functioning on-device (Jetson TensorRT, CUDA), balancing detection quality with power and thermal limitations.
• Develop and manage the secure connectivity layer between SmartMast units and the cloud: utilizing Starlink backhaul, Peplink networking, and local mesh connections between units.
• Design for reliability in environments with denied, degraded, and intermittent connectivity—implementing buffering, store-and-forward, and graceful reconnection strategies.
• Equip the edge stack with observability tools; triage and resolve issues reported from units deployed at sea.
• Collaborate with Hardware, Cloud Platform, and AI/ML teams to establish clear interfaces throughout the entire system stack.
• Over 5 years of experience in embedded Linux or platform software engineering on production systems, not limited to prototype work.
• Proficient in C++ and Python; extensive knowledge of Linux internals (kernel drivers, systemd, networking stack, file systems).
• Practical experience with the Yocto Project build framework for developing custom embedded Linux distributions, layers, and recipes.
• Direct experience with ROS or ROS2 for sensor integration and inter-process communication in robotic or autonomous systems.
• Familiarity with NVIDIA Jetson platforms (Nano, Xavier, Orin) or similar edge AI hardware; understanding of TensorRT and CUDA inference optimization.
• Strong understanding of networking fundamentals: TCP/IP, VLAN configuration, firewall policies (iptables/nftables), and experience with Peplink or equivalent industrial routers.
• Experience in building or managing OTA update systems for embedded fleets; knowledge of rollback, A/B partitioning, and safe deployment practices.
• Ability to interpret hardware schematics and work closely with electrical/hardware engineers during system bringup and integration.
• Excellent debugging skills across hardware-software boundaries, utilizing serial consoles, logic analyzers, packet captures, and field log analysis.
