This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• The Senior Electrical Substation Project Engineer is tasked with overseeing the complete range of HV/EHV substation design, acting as a technical leader throughout engineering projects.
• Lead and manage all technical components of AC power substation initiatives.
• Perform the physical design independently, with support from a Protection & Control Engineer, Civil Engineer, and others.
• Act as the principal technical authority, responsible for scheduling, adherence to standards and specifications, value engineering, planning for design reviews, engineering hours budgeting, and ensuring quality assurance and control.
• Create and supervise essential design deliverables, which include: Power single-line diagrams and equipment specifications, general substation arrangement drawings (plan & substation layout, elevation, grounding, conduit/trench, cable routing, detail drawings, and control buildings layouts), high-voltage bus, structures, equipment, and wiring arrangements, detailed Bill of Materials, and related studies and calculations.
• Function as the primary point of contact for all technical issues among customers, vendors, project managers, and engineering teams.
• Responsible for guiding and assisting engineers and designers to fulfill technical specifications, budget limitations, and project deadlines.
• Propel cross-discipline collaboration to provide fully integrated substation solutions.
• Review and contribute to Inquiry-to-Order (ITO) process deliverables, including: Conceptual engineering proposal documentation (e.g., BOMs, technical specifications), sourcing support, vendor quotation assessments, and technical clarifications and assumptions.
• Lead the preparation of high-voltage equipment specifications and contractor work scopes; assist in vendor engagement and equipment selection.
• May need to oversee a subcontracted design work scope.
• Support the manager in ensuring team productivity and billable utilization.
• Ensure that all engineering outputs meet customer Critical to Quality (CTQ) standards and are delivered punctually and within budget.
• Assist in commissioning and facilitate interactions between customers and project stakeholders.
• Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution.
• A minimum of 10 years of experience in industrial or utility HV/EHV substation design.
• Willingness and ability to travel up to 20% (including international travel), in accordance with company travel and tax policies.
• Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the U.S. in good standing, with the ability to obtain licensure in other states.
• Demonstrated expertise in: Transmission & Distribution substation engineering (utility and renewable energy).
• Primary (outdoor) substation design, calculations, and electrical protection.
• Industrial power system design (12.5 kV and above).
• Proficient in essential design calculations, including: Battery sizing, DC system design, and AC auxiliary power.
• Selection of power transformers and circuit breakers.
• Conductor sizing and application.
• Grounding, lightning protection, and insulation coordination.
• Familiarity with IEEE, ANSI, NEC, and NESC standards; capable of developing complete engineering packages in the absence of specific customer specifications.
• Experience in field-testing and commissioning, with a strong emphasis on safety.
• Strong troubleshooting abilities—both electrical and mechanical.
• Excellent communication skills for customer interactions and commercial awareness (e.g., change orders, project delivery).
• Proficient in AutoCAD/MicroStation and design automation tools.
