Senior Director, Research

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in District of Columbia, +1 more state.

📋 Description

• Oversee the expanding research program aimed at creating effective treatments for ALS and enhancing the quality of life for those impacted by the disease.

• Develop, solicit, evaluate, and manage a portfolio of ALS research that aligns with scientific and strategic objectives.

• Create and implement new initiatives for research funding.

• Manage and supervise external research funding programs.

• Spearhead national collaborative efforts on ALS, such as the AMP ALS initiative.

• Engage in global initiatives established by The International Alliance of ALS/MND and other international entities.

• Lead and collaborate with the board of trustees' research committee regarding strategy, program and project approvals, portfolio assessments, and impact reporting.

• Present research advancements to various audiences including scientific, clinical, policy, and donor stakeholders.

• Stay updated on ALS research, including studies affecting caregivers and individuals at risk of developing ALS.

• Cultivate relationships with ALS research leaders and organizations.

• Attend scientific conferences and engage with awardees, collaborators, and prospective donors.

• Plan and conduct scientific workshops as necessary.

• Establish connections with biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies to further ALS research and drug development.

• Promote grant applications and facilitate partnerships among scientists.

• Supervise 1–2 employees within the research department, which includes hiring, coaching, performance management, and professional growth.

• Report directly to the Executive Vice President and Chief Scientist while collaborating with mission, development, marketing, and finance teams.

• Travel to Association offices, territories, conferences, and other events as required by business needs.

⛳️ Requirements

• A graduate (PhD) degree in Neuroscience, Pharmacology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Clinical Sciences, or a related medical or health profession discipline.

• Minimum of 5 years of demonstrated experience with an organization dedicated to scientific and medical progress.

• Prior experience as a research funder or portfolio manager is highly preferred.

• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with internal and external teams.

• Demonstrated public speaking and writing skills for diverse stakeholders, including individuals with serious illnesses and partners from government, academia, and industry.

• Proven ability to exercise sound judgment and analytical decision-making.

• Familiarity with ALS, neuroscience, or neurodegenerative diseases is preferred.

• Strong computer skills, particularly with Microsoft Office.

• Experience or proficiency with accounting software, contract management systems, development software, human resources systems, inventory software, payroll systems, and project management software.

• Willingness to travel up to 30% of the time for business purposes.

• Capability to supervise, hire, coach, manage performance, and support the professional development of 1–2 employees.
