This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Illinois, +3 more states.
• Lead, manage, and guide the internal finance team.
• Supervise the relationship with and deliverables from a contracted accounting firm.
• Assess and provide recommendations on the ideal mix of in-house and contracted finance functions over time.
• Create and uphold financial policies, procedures, and internal controls.
• Propel continuous enhancement of financial systems and processes.
• Act as the financial liaison to Canopy Farm Management, the subsidiary business of the Institute.
• Direct the annual budgeting process in partnership with department heads and the Executive Director.
• Formulate and sustain multi-year financial forecasts.
• Oversee cash flow planning and monitoring to guarantee organizational liquidity.
• Prepare and present financial reports to the Board of Directors and Finance Committee.
• Coordinate and manage the annual audit process.
• Supervise risk management and internal control systems.
• Ensure financial reporting and compliance for grant-funded programs.
• At least 7 years of progressive finance experience in a senior leadership role, within the nonprofit sector or in the private sector with considerable nonprofit involvement.
• A minimum of 3 years of direct supervisory or management experience.
• Comprehensive working knowledge of fund accounting principles and nonprofit financial reporting.
• Proven expertise in budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management.
• Familiarity with cloud-based financial management systems; proficiency in Sage Intacct or similar software is essential.
• Experience in implementing or overseeing financial systems and designing financial processes.
• Background in supporting board and executive leadership with financial reporting and analysis.
• Excellent communication skills, including the ability to convey complex financial information to non-financial audiences.
• A strong commitment to fostering an open and collaborative work environment.
• Ability to work autonomously with strong self-direction.
• Preferred Qualifications: CPA or equivalent advanced credential, experience with managing audits and contracted finance services, and familiarity with agricultural, conservation, or environmental organizations.
