This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Alabama, +34 more states.
• Lead the strategy and implementation of the transition from self-managed SQL Server on EC2 to AWS RDS (SQL Server).
• Drive initiatives for database cost efficiency: optimizing instance sizes, assessing Reserved Instances, implementing storage tiering, and removing unnecessary licensing expenses.
• Enhance skills and mentor the current Hospice SQL DBA team in AWS database operations, RDS management, and cloud best practices.
• Establish cloud-native database monitoring, alerting, and performance benchmarks utilizing Datadog and CloudWatch.
• Design and implement automated processes for backup, restoration, and disaster recovery using AWS Backup.
• Conduct query optimization, index management, and capacity planning.
• Collaborate with the DevOps team on infrastructure automation using Terraform for RDS.
• Ensure compliance with HITRUST E1 for all database systems, including encryption, access controls, and audit logging.
• Provide support to the Hospice application team for database-related development requirements.
• Assess potential future database modernization initiatives (PostgreSQL, Aurora) for the 2027 roadmap.
• Over 8 years of experience in database administration.
• Extensive knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server (2016+) performance tuning, high availability, and disaster recovery.
• Experience with the setup, migration, and monitoring of AWS RDS (SQL Server), including Multi-AZ deployments.
• Proven experience in database migration projects (from on-premises or EC2 to RDS).
• Strong grasp of backup/restore strategies, point-in-time recovery, and cross-region replication.
• Familiarity with monitoring tools such as Datadog, CloudWatch, and SQL Server DMVs.
• Proficient in T-SQL, stored procedures, and query optimization techniques.
• Experience in regulated environments (HIPAA, HITRUST, SOC2).
