Senior Database Consultant, PostgreSQL

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Macedonia.

📋 Description

• Deliver comprehensive support for all aspects of database and application infrastructure to a varied client base.

• Coordinate, analyze, design, implement, and manage IT solutions, including the configuration and ongoing maintenance of database servers.

• Evaluate client infrastructure and processes, offering recommendations for best practices to enhance current operational procedures.

• Oversee backup procedures and disaster recovery strategies, including proactive monitoring to avert potential issues.

• Manage backup, clustering, mirroring, replication, failover, and the restoration of corrupted databases.

• Create and assess action plans for maintenance, deployment, and upgrades.

• Design, implement, and sustain complex data architectures (e.g., normalized and/or dimensional data models and DDL generation).

• Lead problem management initiatives by evaluating incidents for recurring patterns.

• Establish, manage, and fulfill client commitments in collaboration with team members.

• Prepare client status and incident reports, review client documentation regularly, and respond to client inquiries and requests.

• Ensure alignment with client operating procedures.

• Engage in and occasionally lead efforts to propose, recommend, and potentially design/implement new monitoring checks.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proficient knowledge and experience in installing, configuring, and upgrading PostgreSQL databases and relevant tools for PostgreSQL administration.

• Experience in administering PostgreSQL in virtualized and cloud environments, particularly AWS, GCP, or Azure.

• Familiarity with scripting (bash/python) and software development (C++, Java, Go).

• Experience with automation technologies such as Ansible, Terraform, Puppet, Chef, and SALT.

• Strong debugging skills and the ability to methodically troubleshoot, identifying and applying fixes for known errors, and when necessary, the capability to think creatively to solve complex issues.

• Excellent documentation skills.

• Preferred qualifications include an understanding of current IT service standards such as ITIL.

• Contribution to projects related to PostgreSQL or other database or infrastructure software is advantageous.

• Hands-on experience in monitoring PostgreSQL databases using industry-standard tools like Prometheus, Grafana, SolarWinds, pgAdmin, Zabbix, Nagios, and Datadog.

• Familiarity with cloud-native and managed database monitoring tools, including AWS CloudWatch, Google Cloud Operations (Stackdriver), and Azure Monitor.

• Experience in setting up, configuring, and administering PostgreSQL on Kubernetes is a plus.

• Knowledge in monitoring and observability solutions with Prometheus and Grafana is a plus.

• Required experience with High Availability (HA) solutions for PostgreSQL, including Patroni and repmgr.

• Required experience with PostgreSQL backup tools, such as Barman, pgBackRest, pg_basebackup, etc.

• Experience in migrating databases from various engines including Oracle, MySQL, and MSSQL to PostgreSQL.

• Experience in migrating databases between on-premises and cloud-based environments.

• Experience in analyzing and optimizing schema conversions, addressing SQL compatibility issues, and performance tuning after migration.

• Familiarity with Debezium and Striim is not mandatory but considered beneficial.
