Senior Database Administrator – Core Infrastructure

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Australia.

📋 Description

• Scale and optimize high-throughput MariaDB clusters to facilitate ongoing global growth and new product developments.

• Enhance high-availability, disaster-recovery, and backup strategies through effective design and routinely validated protocols.

• Minimize manual operational tasks by creating automation, increasing process consistency, and enabling secure, efficient database workflows.

• Elevate observability and the quality of alerts by advocating for meaningful metrics, reducing unnecessary noise, and ensuring operational transparency across environments.

• Strengthen database security by implementing robust access controls, disciplined patching and upgrading practices, and secure operational methodologies.

• Engage in modern platform initiatives, including containerized environments, infrastructure-as-code practices, and reproducible deployments.

• Collaborate with service teams to promote improved performance patterns, operational readiness, and database maintenance across the engineering organization.

• Take part in our on-call rotations with a long-term goal of making on-call duties predictable, guided by high-quality signals and preventative engineering.


⛳️ Requirements

• 5+ years of experience managing MariaDB/MySQL in high-volume production settings, including tuning, replication, and troubleshooting.

• Strong knowledge of high-availability patterns, distributed database dynamics, and practical failure scenarios.

• Hands-on experience with database proxies or load-balancing solutions (HAProxy, ProxySQL, MaxScale, or similar).

• Practical experience with CI/CD, GitOps, and Infrastructure-as-Code workflows (Terraform experience preferred).

• Solid understanding of cloud, Linux, and networking fundamentals.

• Experience with containers and orchestration platforms (building container images and managing Kubernetes workloads at scale).

• Strong security awareness regarding access control, upgrade processes, and safe operational practices.

• Expertise in observability: monitoring, alerting hygiene, and preparedness for incident response.

• Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work closely with stakeholders, negotiate long-term plans, write formal documentation, and align success with specific metrics and KPIs.
