Senior Data Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• We are seeking a highly skilled, hands-on Senior Data Engineer to lead the advancement of our data delivery platform while overseeing a team of data engineers.

• This position is a player-coach role: you will design our next-generation data stack, create proofs-of-concept (POCs), and validate new technologies before we implement them on a larger scale — in addition to managing and developing a team of engineers who report directly to you.

• You will collaborate closely with engineering leadership to influence the technical direction of our pipelines while remaining actively engaged in the systems yourself.

• We are intentionally transitioning away from a restrictive, vendor-heavy stack towards a flexible, primarily open-source architecture that keeps our options open.

• We also expect our engineers to operate in a modern, AI-assisted manner — utilizing AI coding tools and prompt-based workflows to accelerate progress without sacrificing quality.

• You should be motivated by assessing tools, constructing POCs, and making pragmatic, evidence-driven choices about future adoptions.

• This role focuses on building and proving — you are expected to write code, design schemas, analyze queries, and delve into the details to comprehend the "how" and "why" behind every pipeline, while also mentoring your team to adopt the same approach.

⛳️ Requirements

• Experience: Over 8 years in data engineering / ETL, with a proven track record as a hands-on engineer who has designed and built data platforms (Principal-level candidates will demonstrate deeper architectural influence and cross-team impact).

• AI-Assisted Engineering: Practical experience with AI coding tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude, or similar) and strong skills in prompt-based development, along with sound judgment regarding where these tools are beneficial and where human oversight is crucial.

• Core Databases: Expert-level SQL and RDBMS expertise with extensive, practical experience in SQL Server and Postgres (including schema design, performance tuning, complex query optimization, and root-cause analysis).

• Modern & Open-Source Stack: Hands-on experience with technologies such as ClickHouse, dbt, and open-source data pipeline/orchestration tools (e.g., Airflow, Dagster, or similar), with the discernment to select the appropriate tool for each task.

• Cloud: Significant, hands-on AWS experience is essential, as we are standardizing on AWS while transitioning from Azure Databricks.

• POC & Evaluation Mindset: Proven ability to independently prototype, benchmark, and assess new technologies and make practical decisions regarding their adoption.

• Programming: Strong proficiency in Python (or similar languages) for constructing and automating data pipelines.

• Education: A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline.

• Bonus Points (Nice to Haves)

• Domain Expertise: Prior experience in Advertising, Media, or Market Research.

• Infrastructure Knowledge: Familiarity with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) and infrastructure-as-code practices.

• Streaming & Real-Time: Experience with streaming and real-time data technologies (e.g., Kafka).
