Senior Data Engineer, AI

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in District of Columbia.

📋 Description

• Create and execute enterprise data models, modeling standards, and the semantic layer for certified analytics and reporting.

• Establish data cataloging, lineage, data classification, and automated data quality testing frameworks.

• Develop and enhance data pipelines and integration patterns on NERC’s cloud data platform.

• Contribute to secure and governed API and data-sharing frameworks.

• Construct and operationalize generative AI, RAG, LLM integrations, predictive analytics, and classification solutions.

• Implement and manage MLOps/LLMOps deployment, evaluation, monitoring, and cost-management practices.

• Oversee AI platform components, including vector stores, orchestration frameworks, and model-serving infrastructure.

• Prototype AI use cases utilizing governed data.

• Establish AI governance guardrails consistent with NIST AI RMF and NERC AI governance.

• Ensure that solutions adhere to regulatory frameworks, internal controls, and NERC requirements.

• Communicate technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

• Document architectures, standards, and operational runbooks thoroughly.

• Assess tools and vendors, providing build-versus-buy recommendations.

• Collaborate with business units, Data Engineers, DBAs, the Principal AI Architect, Regional Entities, E-ISAC, FERC, and internal tools.

⛳️ Requirements

• 7+ years of direct experience in data engineering, data architecture, or ML/AI engineering.

• Proficient in SQL and Python at an expert level.

• Familiarity with cloud data platforms such as Azure, AWS, or GCP.

• Experience with modern warehouse/lakehouse architectures.

• Knowledge of transformation frameworks like Azure Data Factory or similar.

• Practical experience in generative AI, including RAG, embeddings, vector stores, prompting, and model evaluation.

• At least one AI capability successfully deployed in a production environment.

• Understanding of MLOps/LLMOps practices and tools.

• Experience with data governance, metadata management, and data quality tools.

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

• Ability to navigate ambiguity and drive results effectively.

• Must pass a background check prior to employment.

• Must validate identity and eligibility to work in the United States and complete the necessary employment eligibility verification document upon hiring.

• Preferred: Experience with Microsoft Fabric Dataflow.

• Preferred: Background in regulated industries, energy, utilities, or reliability organizations.

• Preferred: Familiarity with NIST AI RMF or similar risk/governance frameworks.

• Preferred: Experience with Microsoft Fabric, Databricks, Snowflake, Power BI semantic models, master data management, and API-based data sharing.
