This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom.
• Collaborate closely with Engineering Managers, Product Managers, Platform Engineers, Security Engineers, Data Engineers, and other backend teams to identify challenges and devise effective solutions.
• Write high-quality code that is well-organized, dependable, maintainable, and easy to comprehend, supporting systems utilized by millions of Depop users.
• Take responsibility for platform and product development, from technical exploration and problem identification to the breakdown of tasks and implementation.
• Contribute to overarching architectural considerations, aiding in establishing the long-term technical trajectory for Depop’s core application and related platform services.
• Enhance the scalability, reliability, observability, and operational safety of essential backend systems.
• Work on foundational platform capabilities, including core backend systems, service-to-service communication, authentication, infrastructure architecture, messaging, database scalability, deployment tooling, and internal engineering enablement.
• Assist in advancing Depop’s core application to ensure it remains secure, efficient, and suitable for future product and engineering requirements.
• Communicate effectively with stakeholders across engineering, product, security, data, and infrastructure, translating technical complexities into a common understanding and actionable strategies.
• Oversee applications from start to finish, including production incident management, debugging, monitoring, and ongoing improvement.
• Adopt agile methodologies, user-centered design principles, and a practical approach to addressing real business and engineering challenges.
• Participate in a culture of continuous improvement by engaging in blameless post-mortems, architecture reviews, engineering guild sessions, and discussions on technical strategy.
• Work daily with fellow engineers in a cross-functional setting to tackle complex issues and produce high-quality code.
• Mentor and foster the development of colleagues, identifying opportunities to share knowledge and enhance team skill sets.
• Take ownership of your code, workflows, services, and data throughout their entire lifecycle.
• Strong software engineering experience, demonstrating the ability to learn and work effectively within the team’s Scala and Python stack.
• A solid background in backend engineering, including experience in designing, building, testing, and operating production services.
• Openness to work across various paradigms and languages, encompassing backend, platform, and data-oriented tasks.
• Excellent technical and non-technical communication skills, with the capability to clarify complex technical topics to diverse audiences.
• Proficiency in testing solutions at various levels, including unit and integration testing.
• Experience working with relational or non-relational databases.
• Familiarity with Kubernetes or similar container orchestration technologies.
• Experience in production systems where reliability, scalability, and maintainability are essential.
• Ability to proactively recognize and resolve complex technical issues independently, while knowing when to seek assistance or collaborate with peers.
