Senior Backend Java Engineer – API, Kafka

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Lead and engage in the design, development, and deployment of Java REST web service APIs and microservices utilizing Docker and Kubernetes.

• Ensure that service designs adhere to the approved architectural standards.

• Acquire knowledge of and integrate emerging API technologies into the existing APIs.

• Develop event-driven services using Kafka.

• Utilize and enhance DevOps tools and processes for CI/CD, including Jenkins, Artifactory, BitBucket, Gradle, Continuous Delivery Director, and Ansible.

• Mentor and assist colleagues in enhancing their skills.

• Identify service defects, troubleshoot them, and deliver effective solutions.

• Provide support for legacy APIs developed on older technologies such as WebSphere, DB2, and Java UI when necessary.

• Oversee and coordinate team activities in a multi-site environment.

⛳️ Requirements

• A post-secondary diploma or degree in Computer Science.

• Over 5 years of progressive development and information technology experience, encompassing the full application development lifecycle and systems integration.

• Strong experience with Java APIs, REST, SOAP, Spring, JSON, Open API, Swagger, web services, and web hosting technologies.

• At least 1 year of experience with DevOps tools, including Jenkins, Artifactory, BitBucket, Maven, CDD, and Ansible.

• Minimum of 1 year of experience with Kafka and/or Kafka Streams, including KSQL.

• Proven experience in managing and coordinating team activities in a multi-site environment.

• A customer-focused approach.

• Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.

• Excellent organizational and planning skills.

• Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.

• Preferred: experience with Kubernetes, Okta, AWS, and MongoDB.

• Preferred: familiarity with Group Retirement products and business domains.

• Working knowledge of Business Rule Management Systems such as IBM ODM.

• Experience with WebSphere, DB2, Java UI technologies including Swing and Spring MVC, and SonarQube.

• Exposure to Enterprise Service Bus integration architectures and technologies.

• Salaried rate of $70–75 per hour or an incorporated business rate of $80–85 per hour.
