Senior Backend Engineer, Python

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Portugal, +1 more country.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, and implement payment solutions that ensure stable and consistent processing.

• Enhance and maintain the existing Perl-based payment gateway.

• Create high-performance microservices using Python.

• Architect and develop scalable, distributed Python services to replace outdated components.

• Integrate and manage external payment services and third-party APIs.

• Ensure smooth transaction flows and robust error management.

• Conduct code reviews and promote engineering best practices.

• Identify performance bottlenecks and enhance scalability.

• Collaborate with DevOps to optimize GitLab CI/CD pipelines.

• Design solutions utilizing AWS services such as Lambda and ECS.

• Adopt a product mindset to grasp business logic, user impact, and feature rationale.

• Troubleshoot and resolve intricate production issues in distributed systems.

• Maintain zero-downtime reliability for merchants.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 5 years of backend engineering experience with significant expertise in Python (preferably FastAPI and AsyncIO).

• A genuine willingness to learn and work with Perl production code is essential.

• Demonstrated experience in building and scaling microservices architectures and high-throughput systems.

• In-depth understanding of integrating third-party APIs, including webhooks, callbacks, idempotency, and retry strategies.

• Strong proficiency with Docker and containerization technologies.

• Solid understanding of AWS cloud infrastructure, including services like Lambda, SQS/SNS, and cloud networking.

• Familiarity with event-driven architectures and messaging systems like Kafka and RabbitMQ.

• Proven track record of owning features from design through to production.

• Ability to mentor and support fellow engineers.

• Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal.
