Senior Backend Engineer – Platform Insights

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in India.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, and enhance backend services in Go for the Data Insights Platform and Siphon, focusing on scalable ingestion, transport, replication, storage, querying, and deployment pathways.

• Take ownership of significant components of the backend architecture for the Data Insights Platform, Siphon, and the Query API, including the gRPC integration with the GitLab Rails application, while influencing the technical direction for system boundaries, reliability, throughput, operability, and maintainability.

• Contribute to systems centered around replication, buffering, query-serving, and query-oriented storage patterns, involving Siphon, NATS or similar messaging layers, ClickHouse-backed storage, and APIs utilized by GitLab product surfaces.

• Lead the production readiness and deployment of the Data Insights Platform and Siphon across GitLab environments, with a focus on rollout safety, environment-specific constraints, and long-term operational readiness.

• Troubleshoot and enhance complex distributed systems in production, addressing performance bottlenecks, scaling limitations, failure recovery pathways, and gaps in observability.

• Collaborate closely with Infrastructure, Data, and fellow Engineering teams on technical design, iteration planning, code reviews, and delivery to ensure the platform remains reliable, secure, and user-friendly for downstream consumers.

• Engage asynchronously with other team members in GitLab's all-remote environment and foster a culture of clear written communication, iteration, and ownership.

• Leverage AI effectively in your daily tasks as a productivity enhancer for implementation, debugging, investigation, and documentation activities.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive backend engineering experience in Go, including the development and operation of production services.

• Proven experience in designing scalable, reliable systems for high-throughput or data-intensive applications.

• Skilled in building and evolving APIs and service integrations, including gRPC or similar patterns between backend services and application layers.

• Experience in working with data platforms, data systems, event pipelines, or other essential infrastructure.

• Knowledge of ClickHouse or comparable query-focused data stores used for query-heavy workloads.

• Familiarity with Ruby on Rails, or a strong willingness and capability to learn quickly.

• Experience addressing infrastructure concerns such as reliability, observability, performance, and deployment in production environments.

• Proven ability to collaborate across team boundaries to deliver platform capabilities utilized by other product and engineering teams.
