Senior Backend Engineer – Payments Infrastructure

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Singapore, +3 more countries.

📋 Description

• Develop and sustain scalable backend payment processes, which encompass charges, refunds, dispute management, and asynchronous webhooks.

• Design, implement, and uphold RESTful and GraphQL APIs.

• Create microservices architectures and event-driven systems utilized by downstream services.

• Refactor legacy codebases and carry out service migrations.

• Phase out obsolete APIs and enhance test coverage.

• Produce clean, production-ready code accompanied by unit, integration, and contract tests.

• Oversee version control, branch workflows, and automated deployment pipelines utilizing GitLab CI/CD.

• Engage in sprint planning, peer code reviews, architectural discussions, and Agile/Scrum ceremonies.

• Diagnose and resolve production incidents within high-concurrency payment and billing environments.

• Utilize logging and monitoring tools to ensure observability.

• Generate architectural designs, API specifications, Knowledge Transfer documents, and operational runbooks.

• Collaborate with full-time core engineers, product managers, and geographically distributed cross-functional teams.

• Expedite the delivery of near-term payment features while minimizing technical debt and modernizing infrastructure.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 3 years of backend software engineering experience in building and managing production backend services at scale.

• Direct experience in payments, fintech, or billing sectors, including payment gateways, processors, or PSPs.

• Strong expertise in Java as the primary programming language.

• Working familiarity with Kotlin and Python.

• Practical experience with microservices.

• Experience in event-driven distributed systems, message queues, asynchronous processing, and eventual consistency.

• Proficient in relational databases, particularly MySQL, and SQL.

• Expertise in RESTful and GraphQL APIs.

• Experience in writing unit, integration, and contract tests.

• Background in designing internal APIs for downstream clients.

• Proven track record of developing end-to-end backend payment processes.

• Experience in refactoring legacy systems and addressing production incidents within payment systems.

• Familiarity with version control and CI/CD using GitLab.

• Experience with Jira for task and sprint management.

• Experience working within Agile/Scrum frameworks.

• Ability to quickly acclimate to existing codebases with little oversight.

• Strong asynchronous collaboration skills with distributed teams.

• Availability to work during Indian Standard Time hours, ideally from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM IST.

• Proficiency in English for interviews, documentation, and daily communication.

• Nice to have: Familiarity with Spring Boot, Gradle, service mesh architectures, PCI-DSS compliance, payment security, financial data handling, Datadog, contributions to open-source projects, or a portfolio of delivered payment features.
