
Senior Backend Engineer – DPS Core, Data Engine Squad

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Illinois.
• Database Engineering & Modernization (60%)
• Refactoring stored procedures: Assess, enhance, and break down intricate stored procedures into smaller, testable, and well-documented components
• Performance engineering: Enhancing query performance, formulating indexing strategies, analyzing execution plans, and optimizing data access behaviors
• Schema evolution: Create backward-compatible changes to schemas with safe rollout and rollback procedures
• Migration interfaces: Develop facades, wrappers, and anti-corruption layers around stored procedures to facilitate the gradual extraction of business logic into services
• Legacy .NET Modernization (30%)
• Refactor .NET Framework code that supports DPS workflows into maintainable and testable units
• Employ strangler fig patterns to progressively transfer logic from the database service layer while ensuring production stability
• Construct domain-aligned modules/services with explicit contracts that empower the Domain & Services Squad to extract functionalities
• Establish patterns for dependency injection, observability, and error handling within established .NET codebases
• Operational Excellence (10%)
• Establish performance baselines, regression detection, and alerting for data-intensive workflows
• Engage in incident response for data and performance-related production challenges
• Develop diagnostic tools and runbooks to minimize time to resolution
• Collaborate with SRE/DevOps on deployment safety (blue/green deployments, feature flags, canary releases for schema modifications)
• Over 8 years of professional software development experience in object-oriented programming languages (C#/.NET is essential)
• Expert-level knowledge of SQL Server (SQL Server 2019)
• Advanced skills in query optimization (execution plans, index tuning, query hints)
• Development and refactoring of stored procedures, functions, and triggers
• Proficiency in database design and normalization
• Performance tuning at scale (handling multi-million row tables, complex joins, and aggregations)
• Understanding of indexing strategies (clustered, non-clustered, filtered, columnstore)
• Experience with SQL Agent jobs and automated workflow patterns
• Knowledge of transaction isolation levels, locking mechanisms, and concurrency management
• Proficient in C# and .NET Framework/.NET Core (both legacy and modern)
• Experience in refactoring established systems while ensuring production stability
• Familiarity with SQL source control (migrations, version control for schema and stored procedures)
