Senior Accountant

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Mexico, +3 more states.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process with a proactive and well-organized calendar, ensuring no follow-ups or unexpected surprises.

• Manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank and credit card reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, prepaids, fixed assets, and intercompany transactions.

• Ensure an accurate and reconciled balance sheet along with a timely income statement that includes variance commentary actionable by management.

• Collaborate closely with an external accounting firm to internalize their work and gradually assume complete responsibility for the closing process.

• Implement US GAAP revenue recognition for CPG and FMCG, encompassing gross-to-net, trade spend, slotting, promotions, and returns to maintain a clear and defensible top line.

• Prepare financial statements that are consistently audit-ready and lender-ready.

• Oversee audit preparation and provide support to external auditors and tax preparers.

• Maintain GAAP compliance in financial records that are fully reconciled and supported by a clear audit trail, ensuring financials can withstand scrutiny from banks and lenders.

• Manage the end-to-end process of distributor and retail deductions and chargebacks, including shortages, MCBs, spoilage, and freight chargebacks.

• Identify, document, validate, and dispute deductions, file at scale, track recovery, and lead the distributed workflow for recovering potentially lost cash.

• Proactively engage with customers and distributors regarding accounts receivable, collections, and disputed deductions to resolve issues promptly and ensure cash flow.

• Analyze margin, COGS, vendor expenditures, and freight to uncover inefficiencies and cost leaks.

• Present management with specific, actionable strategies to reduce costs without prompting.

• Oversee cash reporting, accounts receivable aging, vendor terms, and forecasting inputs related to the line of credit.

• Manage sales tax, 1099s, and internal controls.

• Ensure the company is prepared for diligence as it seeks capital.

• Operate and manage the cloud finance stack, including Xero and Airtable, maintaining disciplined and well-documented records.

• Create and sustain live dashboards and trackers for close status, accounts receivable aging, deductions and recovery, cash flow, and margins, allowing the team to access data seamlessly.

• Integrate and automate across various systems such as the ledger, banks, Airtable, deduction management, OCR, and settlement tools to ensure smooth data flow without manual re-entry.

• Utilize Claude daily as a practical tool for reconciliation, categorization, drafting dispute packages, accelerating analysis, and designing repeatable, documented processes around it.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field.

• A minimum of 5 years of comprehensive accounting experience, including managing a monthly close and preparing financial statements.

• Preference for candidates with experience in CPG, FMCG, food and beverage, or consumer goods sectors.

• Proficient understanding of US GAAP and US accounting standards, with experience assisting US-based companies.

• A genuinely cloud-native and tech-savvy individual—proficient with spreadsheets and cloud accounting, capable of building dashboards, integrating tools, and adopting an AI-first approach.

• Comfortable managing and operating a Xero and Airtable stack, rather than just working within it.

• Familiarity with trade spend, deductions, and disputes related to distributor and retailer chargebacks, or the ability to quickly learn and manage that workflow across a distributed team.

• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English, with proactive communication across different time zones.

• Identifies issues early and resolves them independently without prompts.
