This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Florida.
• Model Optimization: Develop and implement robust statistical validation methodologies to calibrate and authenticate operational warning applications, tools, and/or models.
• Collaboration: Engage in close cooperation with the NHC Science and Mission Integration Division (SMID) personnel and external research partners.
• Software Design: Create and assess software systems and processes specifically designed to fulfill stringent operational requirements.
• Research to Operations: Assist in the Research-to-Operations (R2O) pipelines for assigned downstream model applications.
• Data Visualization: Utilize web development and data visualization tools such as Python, GIS, and JavaScript to depict complex meteorological datasets.
• Technical Adaptability: Quickly adjust to swiftly changing software environments, analytical workflows, and modeling technologies.
• Independent Problem-Solving: Applicants must demonstrate the ability to work autonomously, take initiative, and resolve complex software systems or analytical workflows with minimal oversight.
• Computer Languages: Expertise in scientific programming, particularly in Python and Unix Shell scripting languages.
• Statistics Analysis: Strong proficiency in statistical analysis and methodologies.
• Development Methodologies: Comprehensive understanding of the software development life cycle, including Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) pipelines.
• Analytical Skills: Strong problem-solving and analytical capabilities, with a proven track record of troubleshooting intricate, high-consequence software systems.
• Data Management: Experience in reading, managing, and displaying large gridded datasets and other types of meteorological data, including surface observations.
• The Ideal Scientific Applications Developer will have the following:
• Computer Languages: Familiarity with additional programming languages such as JavaScript and FORTRAN.
• Data Formats: Understanding of common meteorological data formats, including Grib(1,2), Zarr, NetCDF, BUFR, and GIS formats (geojson, shapefiles, KML).
• Version Control: Practical experience with collaborative software development and source code management using Git and GitHub.
• Coding Best Practices: Knowledge of AI coding workflows (e.g., copilot), including the responsible application of agentic AI in scientific contexts.
• Cloud Computing: Experience in optimizing code and applications for cloud computing environments.
• Tropical Meteorology: Familiarity with tropical meteorology and associated hazards, particularly tropical cyclones.
