Safety Engineer – Back-End Leaning

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, and enhance automated moderation systems, abuse detection capabilities, and safety protocols for AI agents across ElevenLabs’ product offerings.

• Collaborate with the Investigations team to pinpoint emerging abuse trends and evolving threats.

• Continuously refine safety systems, detection mechanisms, and guardrails to mitigate new risks.

• Build and sustain internal safety services, overseeing architecture, deployment, reliability, monitoring, and ongoing operations.

• Deploy and integrate fine-tuned, proprietary ML models into production safety systems.

• Create backend services, APIs, internal tools, and user-facing interfaces for moderation, safety operations, and policy enforcement.

• Work alongside Product, Legal, and Safety Policy teams to translate business, regulatory, and policy needs into scalable engineering solutions.

• Balance product expansion, user experience, and platform safety.

• Convert legal and regulatory requirements into actionable safety systems.

• Assist in the technical implementation of safety policies and influence policy decisions using engineering expertise.

• Participate in architectural decision-making and shape the future of safety infrastructure.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 5 years of software engineering experience in building and managing production systems.

• Strong backend engineering expertise, including API design, database management, and scalable service development.

• Proficiency in Python and familiarity with modern backend frameworks.

• Experience in building and maintaining distributed systems and cloud-based applications.

• Comfortable taking full ownership of systems, from technical design and implementation to deployment, monitoring, and ongoing maintenance.

• Ability to work across various parts of the stack, with the capability to develop internal tools or frontend interfaces as required.

• Strong problem-solving abilities and adeptness at navigating ambiguous requirements to make practical engineering choices.

• Capacity to collaborate effectively with both engineers and non-technical stakeholders across diverse functions.

• Experience in building Trust & Safety, content moderation, fraud detection, or abuse prevention systems.

• Familiarity with creating guardrails or safety infrastructure for AI agents and LLM-based applications.

• Experience in deploying and integrating ML models into production applications.

• Knowledge of Kubernetes, Docker, CI/CD pipelines, and AWS/GCP.

• Familiarity with monitoring and observability tools such as Prometheus and Grafana.

• Experience with React or other contemporary frontend frameworks.

• Experience with real-time data processing, event-driven architectures, Kafka, and Redis.
