Risk Solutions Commercial Auto Technical Manager

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Massachusetts.

📋 Description

• Assist Risk Solutions Field, Technical Services, Corporate Underwriting, Claims, and commercial business partners.

• Offer technical leadership for commercial auto and fleet-related risk assessment and consultative services.

• Promote disciplined risk selection, risk enhancement, field capability, and quality of surveys and reports.

• Assess commercial auto exposures and controls, providing technical advice on complex, high-hazard, or emerging fleet risks.

• Lead and support the development of technical skills related to commercial auto through training, coaching, co-travel, account consultation, quality review, case studies, and practical field tools.

• Collaborate on strategic initiatives involving risk selection, service strategy, technical guidance, best practices, data utilization, and emerging loss trends.

• Lead or assist with intricate or high-risk fleet surveys, customer consultations, and stewardship activities.

• Create and uphold standards for commercial auto assessments, service practices, recommendation guidance, documentation expectations, and quality controls.

• Work with underwriting, claims, field operations, agents, customers, and industry leaders on commercial auto risk matters and opportunities for improvement.

• Track loss drivers, emerging exposures, regulatory changes, and industry practices; translate findings into guidance, training, tools, and action plans.

• Offer consultation on driver qualification, MVR standards, onboarding and training, distracted driving controls, fatigue management, routing, scheduling, vehicle-use policies, and management accountability.

• Assess fleet safety management systems, crash reporting and investigation, preventability, post-crash coaching, trend analysis, corrective actions, and program effectiveness.

• Provide advice on vehicle selection, inspection, maintenance, defect reporting, load securement, towing, specialized vehicle operations, and commercial motor vehicle regulations.

• Stay informed about Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, DOT and FMCSA expectations, and relevant state or local requirements.

• Promote the use of telematics, camera systems, driver monitoring, ADAS, GPS, routing tools, and other fleet technologies.

• Identify skill gaps in the field, set development priorities, and enhance field capability.

• Create internal technical resources such as training modules, owner manuals, best-practice guidelines, survey aids, recommendation language, and reference materials.

• Collaborate on innovative solutions and vendor relationships that support collision reduction, driver behavior enhancement, fleet maintenance, claim defensibility, and operational efficiency.

• Advocate for Risk Solutions commercial auto services with customers, agents, underwriting partners, and internal stakeholders.

• Participate in conferences, professional development programs, technical seminars, and webinars to maintain expertise.

⛳️ Requirements

• Minimum of 10 years of experience in Risk Solutions, loss control, fleet safety, transportation safety, or related commercial insurance fields.

• Extensive field experience in risk assessment and consultative services with a national or regional commercial lines carrier, fleet operator, or similar organization.

• Proven expertise in commercial auto exposures and controls, including fleet safety program evaluation, driver qualification, MVR standards, driver training and supervision, loss and root cause analysis, vehicle inspection and maintenance, and management accountability.

• Working knowledge of DOT and FMCSA requirements and their application to commercial motor vehicle operations.

• Experience in evaluating fleet and loss data, translating findings into risk insights, customer recommendations, underwriting support, field guidance, and action plans.

• Familiarity with telematics, camera systems, driver monitoring, ADAS, and other vehicle technologies.

• Preferred professional designation or certification such as CSP, ASP, ARM, CPCU, CDS, TRIP, or an equivalent transportation/fleet safety credential.

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in occupational safety, risk management, transportation, engineering, business, insurance, or a related field is preferred.

• Capability to work independently with minimal supervision.

• Excellent written, verbal, facilitation, presentation, and consultative communication skills.

• Strong analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving abilities.

• Demonstrated project management skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities.

• Willingness to travel as needed, including to customer locations and field operations.

• Proficiency in using a personal computer and standard office equipment.

• Capability to navigate through customer buildings, yards, terminals, shops, loading areas, and other operational environments.

• Ability to safely observe vehicles and fleet operations in active work settings and enter or exit vehicles when necessary.
