Research Scientist

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Work collaboratively with data scientists, engineers, and researchers to create methods for predicting glacier ice flow and its effect on sea level rise.

• Incorporate domain expertise into model development and analyze model outputs to ensure they reflect physically realistic scenarios.

• Design, modify, and assess probabilistic machine learning and hybrid physics-ML models to study cryospheric phenomena, including ice sheet dynamics, surface mass balance, and interactions between ice and ocean.

• Execute extensive numerical simulations related to ice dynamics.

• Process and manage large-scale observational and synthetic datasets (such as satellite imagery, radar data, and outputs from ice sheet models) for model training and validation purposes.

• Determine the sensitivities of model outputs in relation to imperfections in low-quality data or gaps in data.

• Engage in regular team research reviews, providing and receiving constructive feedback on methodologies and findings.

⛳️ Requirements

• A PhD in atmospheric science, geophysics, applied mathematics, computer science, or a closely related discipline is required.

• A minimum of 3 years of postdoctoral or equivalent research experience utilizing machine learning or deep learning techniques in weather forecasting or Earth system modeling (for instance, forecasting, downscaling, or emulation).

• Strong proficiency in Python and relevant machine learning frameworks (such as PyTorch or JAX), along with experience in high-performance or cloud computing environments and large-scale parallel processing.

• Experience in managing noisy data, uncertainty propagation, and error estimation within a geoscientific framework.

• Familiarity with remote sensing datasets, particularly satellite radar, altimetry, and optical imagery.

• Proven ability to work efficiently in cross-functional, multidisciplinary teams.
