
Regional Lead β Rail Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Illinois.
β’ Provide leadership for railroad projects at a regional level and support strategic growth initiatives within the designated area.
β’ Oversee the planning, design, coordination, and execution of various rail projects, including industry tracks, terminals, spurs, mainlines, yards, and sidings.
β’ Collaborate with railroad companies on a range of DOT and municipal public agency projects that involve railroad interfaces for at-grade crossings, grade-separated structures, and utility crossings.
β’ Act as a senior technical resource and advisor for rail design (geometry, material, etc.), grading, drainage, and associated infrastructure.
β’ Develop and enhance relationships with clients, railroad operators, public agencies, and industry partners throughout the region.
β’ Assist in business development efforts such as client engagement, proposal preparation, project pursuits, and participation in industry organizations and conferences.
β’ Provide mentorship, leadership, and technical direction to engineers, designers, and junior staff across various offices and project teams.
β’ Work in conjunction with Project Managers and regional leadership to assist with staffing strategies, resource planning, and operational efficiency.
β’ Coordinate with federal, state, and local agencies across multiple states to ensure adherence to relevant regulations and railroad standards.
β’ Lead the application and enforcement of quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) procedures throughout project development and execution.
β’ Contribute to the ongoing development and standardization of rail engineering and coordination practices, design procedures, and project delivery processes across the organization.
β’ Travel periodically for client meetings, project site visits, regional coordination, and industry events.
β’ Perform additional duties as required.
β’ Bachelorβs degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
β’ At least 10 years of relevant experience in rail, transit, railroad infrastructure, and transportation/land development engineering projects.
β’ Professional Engineer (PE) license is mandatory.
β’ Proven experience in leading multidisciplinary rail engineering projects and managing client relationships.
β’ Strong knowledge of design standards for tracks, at-grade railroad crossings, grade-separated structures, and utility crossings.
β’ Experience in mentoring technical staff and leading engineering teams across multiple projects or offices is preferred.
β’ Familiarity with CAD platforms and standard engineering software applications.
β’ Excellent skills in business development, communication, leadership, and organization.
β’ Ability to effectively collaborate with railroad staff, clients, agencies, contractors, and internal teams.
β’ Capacity to work independently while also contributing to a collaborative team culture.
β’ Willingness to travel regionally as necessary to support project delivery and client engagement.
