This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Oversee and guide State Directors.
• Directly manage and mentor a team of State Directors, offering strategic direction, executive-level assistance, and accountability.
• Act as a thought partner for State Directors as they navigate intricate political landscapes, coalition dynamics, campaign strategies, organizational growth, and team leadership.
• Cultivate an environment of collaboration, shared learning, and ongoing leadership development throughout all state programs.
• Ensure uniformity in leadership practices, planning, execution, and evaluation across state programs, while permitting flexibility for state-specific strategies.
• Assist State Directors in recognizing emerging opportunities, risks, and strategic shifts during election and legislative cycles.
• Support directors in making impactful decisions regarding campaign priorities, coalition strategies, staffing, and resource distribution.
• Collaborate closely with Communications, Policy & Analytics, Development, Operations, and the Senior Leadership Team to ensure state initiatives align with organizational priorities.
• Convert national organizational priorities into cohesive state-level execution.
• Identify chances for cross-state collaboration and shared strategies.
• Assist in establishing department priorities, annual objectives, and operational plans.
• Recognize organizational gaps and suggest enhancements to systems, processes, and collaboration.
• Represent the organization at national and regional democracy coalitions, partner gatherings, funder meetings, and strategic discussions.
• Build and sustain relationships with key coalition partners, movement organizations, and allied stakeholders.
• Collaborate with State Directors to formulate sophisticated campaign strategies that integrate legislative advocacy, communications, and coalition building.
• Help assess campaign effectiveness and pinpoint opportunities to amplify successful strategies across states.
• Provide department approvals and reporting.
• Monitor state program performance, budgets, and staffing in collaboration with Finance and Operations.
• Ensure compliance practices are upheld and identify issues that require legal or executive review.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience.
• 12–15 years of leadership experience in advocacy, organizing, campaigns, public policy, civic engagement, democracy reform, or a related area.
• A minimum of 5 years of experience managing seasoned managers, demonstrating an ability to coach, develop, and lead high-performing leaders.
• Proven success in leading complex, multi-state or multi-regional programs, campaigns, or initiatives that necessitate strategic coordination across varied political and organizational settings.
• Established ability to provide executive-level strategic advice and thought partnership to senior leaders facing complex political, organizational, and operational issues.
• Experience in building and maintaining relationships with coalition partners, funders, public officials, and other external stakeholders, and representing an organization in high-level strategic discussions.
• Proven capability to influence and collaborate across departments to drive alignment, resolve complex challenges, and advance organizational priorities.
• Strong political acumen with the ability to evaluate risks, adapt to rapidly changing situations, and make sound strategic decisions under pressure.
• Experience in overseeing organizational planning, performance management, goal setting, and accountability systems.
• Exceptional written, verbal, facilitation, and interpersonal communication skills, including the capacity to communicate effectively with executive leadership, staff, partners, and external audiences.
• Strong commitment to equity, inclusion, and fostering collaborative, high-performing teams.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities, exercise sound judgment, and maintain discretion in a fast-paced environment.
• Willingness and ability to travel regularly (approximately 40%) to support state programs, organizational priorities, and external partnerships.
