This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Germany.
• Evaluate and analyze incoming manuscripts and book proposals.
• Edit children's and young adult novels, along with graphic novels, independently from plot and character development to a polished manuscript ready for typesetting.
• Manage copyediting, typesetting, and layout checks until final print approval.
• Communicate with authors and ghostwriters, oversee feedback cycles, and monitor project milestones.
• Act as the primary contact for creators regarding book content, translating their ideas into engaging, feasible narratives.
• Adhere to publication timelines and plan backwards from final print approval.
• Identify potential scheduling risks early on.
• Write content for back covers.
• Contribute to the development of series concepts.
• Perform topic research and conduct market analyses.
• A minimum of two to three years of experience in editing children's or young adult fiction, whether in publishing, at an agency, with a book packager, or as a freelancer.
• A strong understanding of story structure, character development, point of view, and dialogue.
• Excellent copyediting and proofreading capabilities.
• Experience working on series and adhering to strict publication schedules.
• A personal commitment to reading children's and young adult novels in your leisure time.
• Native-level proficiency in German.
• Ability to work autonomously and maintain organization in a home-office setting.
• Commitment to meet deadlines and report issues promptly.
• Proficient in using Microsoft Word Track Changes.
• Proven experience in children’s fiction; experience focused solely on nonfiction, educational textbooks, or academic publishing is inadequate.
• Experience with YouTubers or influencers is not mandatory.
• Uncapped bonuses.
• Additional compensation for each title published on schedule and every SPIEGEL bestseller, realistically amounting to €3,000–€4,000 annually.
