Product Design, Studio Engineer

📋 Description

• Advocate for Design through the perspective of mechanical engineering. Apply technical expertise, innovative problem-solving, and sound engineering judgment throughout the design process; guiding the team through intricate trade-offs and ensuring that compromises enhance rather than weaken the overall product vision.

• Connect Design Intent & Engineering Execution: Collaborate closely with internal Industrial Design and UX teams to uphold the aesthetic and ergonomic vision of the rider experience while promoting structural and mechanical feasibility.

• Take Ownership of Physical Vehicle Architecture: Oversee micro-tolerance loops, high-density component integration (displays, sensors, lighting, interior electronics), and intricate packaging layouts within compact, highly stylized enclosures.

• Lead in Advanced CAD & Surfacing: Spearhead the creation of high-quality Class-A surfaces and digital master models, acting as the definitive source of truth that transforms industrial design sketches into production-ready mechanical files.

• Engage in Rapid Prototyping & Validation: Design, construct, and assess proof-of-concept mockups using quick-turn CNC, 3D printing, and custom fabrication to validate ergonomic and aesthetic decisions in real time.

• Design for High-Volume Manufacturability (DFM): Create highly cosmetic components, exterior paneling, and interior structures optimized for high-volume manufacturing processes (injection molding, thermoforming, composites, sheet metal, and casting).

• Collaborate with Vendors & Manage Factory Bring-Up: Work alongside external manufacturing partners to ensure that visual and cosmetic standards are upheld throughout the molding validation, tooling, and initial vehicle assembly stages.

• Establish Design Standards: Assist in defining and maintaining physical cosmetic standards, texture finishes, and tolerance guidelines to guarantee that every vehicle in the Glydways fleet represents a seamless, high-quality embodiment of the brand.

⛳️ Requirements

• 5–10+ years of experience as a Product Design Engineer (PDE), Studio Engineer, or Mechanical Engineer collaborating closely with Industrial Design teams at automotive, high-growth technology, consumer hardware, or mobility companies.

• Portfolio of Completed Work: A robust portfolio showcasing complex physical architecture layouts, high-density integration, and a track record of bringing highly cosmetic hardware products from concept to high-volume production.

• Mastery of CAD: Outstanding proficiency in advanced 3D surfacing and master-modeling techniques utilizing industry-standard tools such as Siemens NX, Creo (Pro-E), or SolidWorks.

• Systems Thinker, Detail-Oriented: Capable of navigating complex, infrastructure-intensive electro-mechanical systems and refining them into polished, clean design executions without compromising performance or aesthetics.

• Manufacturing Knowledge: Extensive understanding of GD&T, tolerance analysis, and mass-production techniques across plastic injection molding, stamping, casting, and cosmetic finishing.

• Collaboration & Leadership Skills: Effective at working at the intersection of creative and highly technical teams; an adept communicator who can confidently advocate for both engineering integrity and aesthetically pleasing design.

• Startup-Ready: Comfortable with ambiguity, capable of building vehicle programs from the ground up, and able to iterate rapidly as we expand our network.
