Principal Software Engineer, Node.js

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Nigeria, +4 more states.

📋 Description

• Develop software solutions across various domains, ensuring that each project is executed with a focus on scalability, maintainability, performance, security, and operational excellence.

• Take on the role of a technical lead, offering guidance and mentorship to team members.

• Collaborate with Scrum Product Owners, Engineering Managers, and Directors to uphold quality across all projects that Deimos engages in.

• Oversee the quality of work produced at Deimos.

• Own the architecture and lifecycle of critical systems, from design to production, ensuring they are scalable, resilient, observable, and operationally efficient.

• Promote long-term maintainability and minimize technical debt at a system-wide level.

• Design and construct high-scale, distributed services utilizing modern Node.js and TypeScript, with a strong focus on containerization and cloud-native patterns.

• Define and advance system architecture across multiple teams and services.

• Serve as a technical authority within the organization, evaluating and introducing frameworks, tools, and engineering practices.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 10 years of experience in software engineering, with clear evidence of operating at a principal level.

• Demonstrated impact across multiple teams and systems, not limited to a single codebase.

• Proven experience in architecting and scaling production systems successfully.

• Expert-level, idiomatic proficiency in Node.js and JavaScript/TypeScript.

• Strong understanding of the Node.js runtime and event loop, asynchronous and non-blocking programming, performance tuning, and memory management.

• Experience in designing modular, testable, maintainable services using frameworks such as Express, NestJS, or Fastify.

• Significant experience with microservices, event-driven architecture, and eventual consistency.

• Practical experience with caching layers (e.g., Redis) and messaging or queuing systems (e.g., Kafka, RabbitMQ, SQS/SNS).

• Proven ability to design systems for high availability, fault tolerance, and scalability.

• Deep experience with at least one primary cloud provider (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and working knowledge of others.

• Strong understanding of containerization (Docker) and orchestration (Kubernetes or equivalent).

• Experience in designing cloud-native architectures, including 12-factor principles, autoscaling, and resilience patterns.

• Strong experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL/MySQL) and NoSQL (e.g., DynamoDB).

• Ability to design for performance at scale, including indexing strategies, query optimization, and data modeling.

• Proven experience in decomposing monoliths into scalable distributed systems.

• Ability to manage transitional architectures (hybrid monolith + microservices).

• Strong experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing strategies (unit, integration, and end-to-end), and DevOps practices.

• Deep understanding of observability, including metrics, logs, and tracing.

• Demonstrated ability to influence technical direction across teams.

• Strong communication skills, capable of aligning engineers, product teams, and leadership.
