Principal Software Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Texas.

📋 Description

• Establish and uphold the comprehensive Core Software architecture for the fusion power plant.

• Develop and deploy essential Core Software components utilizing C++ and Python.

• Specify interfaces among software, control hardware, diagnostics, plant equipment, data systems, and operator tools.

• Create automated calibration facilities and workflows that yield traceable and repeatable outcomes.

• Set benchmarks for architecture, coding, testing, observability, documentation, releases, reliability, security, and fault tolerance.

• Drive technical decisions across teams, mentor engineers, manage trade-offs, and evolve into a technical lead.

• Report directly to the Head of Software.

⛳️ Requirements

• Significant experience in designing and implementing control software for intricate physical or industrial systems.

• Extensive experience with hardware and software interfaces, including device integration and system-level troubleshooting.

• Proficiency in designing and implementing automated calibration facilities or workflows.

• Strong expertise in data handling, data pipelines, metadata, and dependable data storage.

• Experience in designing and implementing HMI for operators or technical users.

• Robust software design and implementation abilities in C++, Python, or comparable languages.

• Capability to define architecture for complex, mission-critical systems amidst evolving requirements and stringent physical constraints.

• Familiarity with thorough testing, observability, reliability, fault tolerance, security, and documentation practices.

• Experience with software for plasma, nuclear power, high-energy physics, or scientific facilities is a plus.

• Familiarity with real-time or distributed control systems and high-throughput data acquisition is a plus.

• Experience in defining shared frameworks, API conventions, configuration management, or communication systems is a plus.

• Expertise in writing architecture decision records or technical proposals and leading architecture reviews is a plus.

• Experience transitioning into a department-level technical lead or mentoring senior engineers is a plus.

• Proficiency in AI-assisted software development, or a strong enthusiasm for responsibly using approved AI tools, is a plus.
