Principal Software Developer – Databases

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Lead the design and execution of impactful capabilities for the SRS platform, including event platform CDC integration (Kafka), schema automation, Structured Record Access API, and fleet management tools.

• Establish the technical direction for one or more sub-areas of SRS, focusing on architectural standards, design reviews, and enhancing the quality of team outputs.

• Regularly evaluate the requirements of the SRS cloud platform at scale, identify major risks and gaps, and drive the roadmap to mitigate them.

• Oversee and enhance fleet-wide operations, encompassing capacity management, monitoring and alerting, query optimization, load balancing, and data replication for reporting tasks.

• Develop and institutionalize best practices and health models for the database fleet.

• Cultivate a strong network of storage advocates across engineering teams.

• Take responsibility for the reliability of your creations, including monitoring, runbooks, on-call responses, and post-incident learning.

• Lead migration and schema lifecycle initiatives across the fleet while collaborating with product teams.

• Mentor P2/P3 engineers and conduct design and code reviews.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 6 years of experience in software engineering within a platform, infrastructure, or data engineering environment.

• At least 5 years of experience with Kubernetes architecture at scale.

• Over 7 years of hands-on experience with Terraform.

• More than 7 years of experience with cloud data technologies.

• Extensive experience with Postgres or DynamoDB at scale, focusing on fleet-level operations rather than application-level usage.

• Proven ability to lead technical projects from inception to production.

• Practical experience with Kafka or event streaming in a production setting; bonus points for building CDC pipelines (Postgres binlog, DynamoDB Streams, Debezium).

• Experience with ORM at the framework or platform level, specifically in building or extending ORM tools for semantic eventing.

• Hands-on experience with Kubernetes CRDs, including designing or operating controllers/operators to manage platform resources.

• Strong background in AWS services such as IAM, RDS/Aurora, DynamoDB, ECS/EKS, and multi-region architectures.

• Ability to drive technical consensus across diverse teams.

• Familiarity with Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform) and GitOps deployment methodologies.

• Excellent communication and organizational skills, with the ability to influence outcomes across teams, groups, and leadership.
