Principal Mechanical Engineer – Starship

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Texas.

📋 Description

• Develop innovative design concepts from the ground up and size vehicle structures in accordance with flight loads.

• Collaborate with colleagues across various vehicle systems to achieve a balance among mass, cost, and capability.

• Create comprehensive designs and generate CAD models in NX for components, assemblies, and vehicle integration.

• Construct finite element models and analyze structures to ensure they meet vehicle requirements.

• Utilize first-order hand calculations and empirical formulas for design assessment and iteration.

• Fabricate development articles to evaluate the strength of individual joints and design elements.

• Conduct structural testing on subassemblies and complete airframe sections.

• Work in partnership with build engineers and technicians to enhance designs.

• Assist in the factory assembly of hardware and monitor designs throughout production and flight.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline.

• Over 7 years of experience in mechanical design and analysis.

• Proficiency in designing, analyzing, building, and testing high-performance mechanical systems.

• Experience collaborating within interdisciplinary teams to create solutions for complex and challenging problems.

• Familiarity with FEA or multiphysics simulation software (e.g. NASTRAN, ABAQUS, ANSYS).

• Background in designing and executing qualification testing.

• Strong grasp of mechanical first principles and structural analysis techniques.

• Expertise in selecting materials and manufacturing processes for mechanical components.

• Experience in analytical/scientific programming (e.g. Python, Matlab, Excel).

• Willingness to work extended hours and weekends when necessary.

• Candidates must be capable of working safely at heights (up to 500ft), in confined spaces, using an air-purifying respirator, and meeting the physical demands of the role.

• Candidates may need to complete a pre-employment questionnaire and/or physical examination to verify these capabilities.

• Must comply with ITAR requirements: U.S. citizen or national, U.S. lawful permanent resident, refugee, asylee, or eligible to obtain the necessary U.S. Department of State authorizations.
