Principal Engineer – Substation

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Act as the senior technical authority for electrical substation projects ranging from 12 kV to 735 kV.

• Function as the Professional-of-Record, ensuring technical precision, quality, and compliance of design deliverables.

• Provide technical guidance for substation design activities, encompassing layouts, station service systems, grounding systems, and equipment selection.

• Lead the development, review, and approval of one-line and phasing diagrams, layouts, grounding designs, and conduit and cable routing designs.

• Oversee intricate engineering studies, including grounding, lightning protection, insulation coordination, bus design, and equipment integration.

• Develop and authorize design criteria, specifications, reports, studies, and construction packages.

• Serve as the senior technical liaison with clients, utilities, and stakeholders.

• Facilitate technical workshops, client meetings, design reviews, constructability assessments, and risk analyses.

• Mentor engineers, EITs, designers, and project teams.

• Conduct independent technical and quality reviews.

• Review and endorse vendor drawings and technical submissions.

• Provide engineering support throughout the construction phase, including field reviews, RFIs, troubleshooting, and issue resolution.

• Coordinate multidisciplinary teams to deliver cohesive designs.

• Uphold engineering standards, procedures, best practices, safety-by-design, quality assurance, and continuous improvement.

• Ensure that projects adhere to scope, schedule, budget, and quality standards.

• Assist with proposals, technical pursuits, client relationship management, estimates, and RFQ responses.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.

• Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Canada, preferably in British Columbia, or the ability to obtain registration.

• Over 20 years of experience in transmission and distribution engineering, with substantial expertise in substation design.

• Proven experience as a technical authority, senior engineering lead, or Professional-of-Record on complex substation projects.

• Strong proficiency in substation design, including layouts, grounding systems, bus design, insulation coordination, station service systems, and major equipment integration.

• Comprehensive knowledge of Canadian Electrical Code (CSA C22.1), IEEE, and IEC standards.

• Familiarity with OH&S requirements.

• Capability to provide technical leadership and mentorship across various projects and teams.

• Ability to manage intricate technical challenges and make well-informed engineering decisions.

• Exceptional communication and interpersonal abilities.

• Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, complemented by excellent engineering judgment.
