Principal Engineer, Mobile

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Washington.

📋 Description

• Act as the architectural lead for the C++ Turbo Module that connects the React Native JavaScript layer to the vehicle's Secure Gateway Module via USB/DTLS.

• Manage the TypeScript/C++ interface for vehicle data polling, UDS diagnostic requests, CAN bus messaging, OTA update management, DTC operations, and security access.

• Oversee the design of CAN decoders and shared CAN message definitions; evaluate changes to the vehicle communication data model.

• Direct the architecture of the DTLS session lifecycle, which includes certificate issuance, security endpoints, and cryptographic operations on the native layer.

• Assess protobuf-based dynamic DID mapping.

• Uphold the Definition of Done for vehicle communication pull requests and establish the technical quality standards.

• Lead the architecture of layered mobile applications from Presentation to Native Modules and Data Persistence.

• Spearhead the architecture and implementation of EV Charging, Service Scheduling, Vehicle Settings, and Key Management / Plugged-In flows.

• Define server state management patterns for caching, synchronization, optimistic updates, and stale-while-revalidate behavior.

• Manage encrypted local storage and per-VIN partitioning; oversee schema validation hardening.

• Direct warm-start lifecycle hygiene and preventative patterns.

• Supervise secure WebView integrations for Account Management, Finance, and E-Commerce.

• Take charge of push notification architecture, including backend integration, token management, permissions, deep linking, and encryption.

• Provide technical guidance for the mobile backend-for-frontend and extend or troubleshoot service endpoints.

• Manage mobile API client architecture, JWT refresh, API key gating, and ensure version-safe endpoint evolution.

• Address ownership gaps in charging API and oversee the integration of RepairPal BFF.

• Establish a mobile observability strategy using Datadog RUM, structured logging, and crash reporting.

• Escalate and resolve critical native crashes, DTLS session interruptions, and vehicle state failures.

• Collaborate with the QAM on testability and gray-box vehicle communication testing.

• Lead performance profiling efforts and set response-time benchmarks.

• Oversee the architecture for iOS and Android builds and releases, including EAS Build, provisioning, distribution, and production submission.

• Define OTA update channels, rollout policies, rollback procedures, and the boundaries between native and OTA updates.

• Manage App Store and Google Play certification readiness.

• Set the technical direction for the MOB pod through ADRs, design reviews, and escalation of blockers.

• Mentor SDE IIs and SDE IIIs while conducting PR reviews grounded in architecture.

• Represent mobile engineering in technical, security, and vehicle-interface discussions across pods and disciplines.

• Embrace and showcase AI-assisted development workflows.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent professional experience.

• Over 10 years of professional software engineering experience, with at least 4 years dedicated to mobile application development (iOS, Android, or React Native).

• Extensive knowledge of C++ native module architecture within a React Native framework.

• Profound expertise in React Native: Turbo Modules, Expo ecosystem (EAS Build, EAS Update, Expo Router), TypeScript, and state management patterns.

• Proven experience in building or maintaining backend services, including REST API design, authentication middleware, JWT lifecycle management, and third-party service integration.

• Familiarity with serial or embedded communication protocols such as CAN bus, UDS diagnostics, DID-based data polling, or DTLS/TLS in constrained hardware environments.

• Strong understanding of mobile security patterns, including hardware-backed key management, encrypted local storage, certificate-based device authentication, and secure WebView session handling.

• Solid CI/CD and release engineering expertise, with experience in multi-environment build pipelines, OTA update strategies, and App Store / Google Play submission processes.

• Experience with mobile observability tools, including instrumentation, production crash diagnosis, and performance profiling.

• Automotive software experience, secure gateway architectures, vehicle certificate issuance processes, or embedded cryptography is highly preferred.

• Preferred experience in integrating EV charging networks or fleet telematics platforms.

• Familiarity with Protocol Buffers or dynamic vehicle data configuration mapping is strongly preferred.

• Prior experience in scaling a mobile product from pre-GA to GA launch under strict date constraints is strongly preferred.
