Principal Engineer, IoT & Device Messaging

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Ohio.

📋 Description

• Oversee the integration of pharmacy software with conveyors, PLCs, vision systems, divertors, and label printers.

• Design and implement IoT and distributed systems for pharmacy automation.

• Create and maintain connected-device platforms, covering device identity, provisioning, twins/shadow state, fleet management, telemetry, and OTA updates.

• Develop reliable messaging and assured delivery systems utilizing gRPC and MQTT.

• Apply reliability patterns such as idempotency, deduplication, transactional outbox, retries, dead-letter queues, partitioning, ordering, and reconciliation.

• Design and manage multi-tenant SaaS platforms with containers, Kubernetes, Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD, and observability tools.

• Implement security measures for connected devices and distributed systems.

• Report directly to the Senior Director of Enterprise Architecture.

• Willingness to travel 50%.

⛳️ Requirements

• A Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field is required.

• A Master's degree is preferred.

• Over 12 years of experience in software engineering.

• More than 5 years of experience in building distributed, real-time, or high-throughput systems.

• Extensive expertise in .NET / C# distributed systems.

• Expert-level knowledge of C# and .NET.

• Proficiency in asynchronous programming.

• Skills in performance tuning.

• Experience with microservices architecture.

• Background in IoT / connected device platforms.

• Knowledge of device identity and provisioning.

• Familiarity with device twins/shadow state.

• Experience in fleet management.

• Understanding of telemetry pipelines.

• Experience with OTA (over-the-air) configuration and firmware updates.

• Capability to handle intermittent connectivity.

• Proficient in gRPC and MQTT.

• Knowledge of at-least-once delivery.

• Understanding of idempotency and deduplication.

• Familiarity with transactional outbox and retry logic.

• Experience with dead-letter queues, partitioning, and ordering.

• Skills in reconciliation.

• Proficient in Kubernetes.

• Experience with SaaS platform architecture and operations.

• Familiarity with containers.

• Knowledge of Infrastructure as Code.

• Proficient in CI/CD practices.

• Experience with OpenTelemetry.

• Knowledge of SLOs and observability.

• Competence in device identity and certificate authentication.

• Understanding of mutual TLS and OAuth 2.0 / OpenID Connect.

• Experience with service-to-service authorization and MQTT access control.

• Skills in secrets management and threat modeling.

• Ability to work remotely while being open to travel 50%.
