Principal Backend Architect

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Latin America.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of the backend architecture across the platform and spearhead the gradual decomposition of a substantial monolith into manageable services.

• Establish backend engineering standards, best practices, tools, shared libraries, service templates, and platform capabilities.

• Lead the design of APIs and contracts, ensuring versioning and backward compatibility.

• Oversee the event-driven architecture utilizing Azure Service Bus, focusing on delivery guarantees, retries, idempotency, and recovery from failures.

• Define scalable integration patterns for customers and partners.

• Collaborate with the Data Architect on aspects such as data ownership, transactional boundaries, access patterns, and performance of queries.

• Enhance platform reliability, security, observability, and efficiency in cloud costs.

• Advocate for AI-assisted engineering practices and the integration of AI tools and workflows.

• Mentor engineers, review critical pull requests, facilitate technical office hours, and document architectural decisions through Architecture Decision Records (ADRs).

• Participate in incident response, conduct technical interviews, engage in quarterly planning, and occasionally lead customer-facing technical discussions.

• Work alongside the Lead/Principal Architect, Principal UI Architect, and Data Architect to steer the technical direction.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 10 years of backend engineering experience, including multiple years in architecture or technical leadership roles at the principal level.

• Profound, hands-on expertise in C# and .NET.

• Familiarity with Azure services, especially Azure Functions, Azure Service Bus, and Azure Data Factory.

• Experience with PostgreSQL, Cosmos DB, Snowflake, CI/CD pipelines, and DevOps methodologies.

• Background in incrementally decomposing large monolithic systems.

• Strong comprehension of event-driven and asynchronous architectures, encompassing message ordering, idempotency, poison messages, retries, and dead-letter queues.

• Extensive experience with API design, service contracts, versioning, and backward compatibility.

• Robust data-access fundamentals, including query optimization, zero-downtime migrations, and managing inconsistent or complex customer data.

• Proven experience in production ownership, including observability, alerting, incident response, and root-cause analysis.

• Daily hands-on usage of AI development tools such as Claude, Claude Code, or similar agentic engineering tools.

• Practical experience in building AI-powered solutions involving agents, reusable skills, MCP servers, or evaluations.

• Exceptional proficiency in written and spoken English.

• Ability to convey complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.

• Capacity to provide specific examples of personal ownership of architectural decisions, trade-offs, and measurable outcomes.

• A pragmatic engineering mentality and sound judgment.
